Does Osama bin Laden read the work of left-wing media figures and bloggers? It's quite possible, argues Brendan O'Neill:

When Al Jazeera broadcast Osama bin Laden's latest audiotape in January, it provoked the same sense of déjà vu as Messages to the World: The Statements of Osama bin Laden, recently published by the leftist publishing house Verso.

The book is a collection of every public utterance made by the Al Qaeda leader from 1994 to 2004. According to The Observer's excitable reviewer, it shows that he is a "charismatic man of action, an eloquent preacher, a teacher of literature and a resilient, cunning, wonderfully briefed politician." To me, however, there was something irritatingly familiar rather than surprisingly eloquent about his tone and turns of phrase.

Then it struck me: Bin Laden is a blogger. Not literally, of course, but he certainly speaks the language of the blogosphere. He references Robert Fisk and Michael Moore, those darlings of the anti-war Web. His latest statement recommends that people read Rogue State by William Blum, whose e-mail newsletter, Anti-Empire Report, is frequently republished and discussed in the left-wing blogosphere.

    • The terrorists hate the left wing of American politics. They feel that they are the sum of all evil in the world. In England the left is much different. Much nicer for one, less judgmental and not so prone to attack ones own country. America is the beacon of light for most other countries. It is very sad to see what is happening right now. You good folks are tearing your selves apart from the inside. Just look how you have treated your current President, this is looked upon as a weakness by your enemies.

    • The article is my last on Current. I would like to say goodbye to all the good friends I have made on here. When I first came here I had never blogged, Hadn't read very much in 28 years. Certainly had written nothing but contracts in as long. It was fun mixing it up with people who didn't agree with me, I believe I changed some, if just a little, I know I was changed. I haven't been treated right by the staff of Current, while always making a point of telling me HOW fairly I was being treated I always got Fupped, Whether it was getting kicked off for two weeks for returning fire, or not getting the achievements I have earned. Besides the amount of submissions my achievements havent changed since the 3rd week I was here. I have had a couple on comments on TV and at least 1 article two weeks ago. That is not reflected in my profile. I don't want to be petty, because the achievements weren't why I was here. But, there comes a point when the slaves rebel. I am tired of my posts being changed in the middle of the night, I am tired of Current playing favorites with certain members who break the community standards without impeachment. I am tired of the Anti American and Anti Semitic sentiments which go unchecked. I am tired of being called ignorant, and being called a racist by pseudo Nazis who hate Jews. And I am not a Jew BTW. But my family fought to give them a right to live and I'll be damned if I am gonna listen to all this racism while it is being endorsed by the website I am on. I have been censored just because of my point of view more times than I can remember. I have had articles shoot to number 20 in 30 minutes and then just disappear, three in one day actually. This site had great potential to bring us all together, this is what I had hoped for. But , like a large family who's father isn't fair with the punishment he doles out, this sight is dysfunctional. I have had many friends tell me this, I was always the voice of optimism, thinking the powers that be would wake up and realize what they have. But they are alas just kids, kids who have been programed to hate and be prejudiced, my generation wasn't perfect. We were too greedy, and fun loving. But this generation might be what causes the downfall of civilization. Bye all.
