Wireless Power | Summer 2009

The big buzz at CES? eCoupled.com's truly extraordinary wireless charging technology.

Claiming to be the, "Evolution of Wireless Power" and utilizing mutiple technologies to make it happen safely, the reality of real wireless device charging is just a few months away.

"Through its advanced identification protocol, eCoupled technology adapts its operation to match the needs of each device it powers by communicating with it in real time. It assesses and determines not only power needs but also factors in battery or device age and charging lifecycles. It provides only the necessary power needed to keep a device at peak efficiency..."

how can you send power wirelessly? how is that possible?!

I don't want to see this any near me. Enough harm we are doing by using the cellphones like to also use Wifi, and then WiMAX and power waves!? Seriously, this is not secure.

I agree with petarro. All of this should first be tested so that no one gets any brain cancer scare like the cell phones have done.

I've been seeing this technology in quite a few articles over the past years. A lot of ambitious ideas were along the lines of power lights and various other devices across rooms or areas not immediately adjacent to one another. My question is, with all those electromagnetic waves running around, what the heck happens when you walk between the coil and the device it's interacting with and it blanks all your credit cards? Also, electromagnetic waves are the same thing that gives people living below high voltage lines cancer am I right?

No matter what the American people think; we'll always be subject to Big Brother's experiments.

This has already been theorised and almost developed by a man named Nikola Tesla. Funny, it's been around seventy years since he origionaly started work on it, and we're just now getting it done. I bet, had he lived longer, he would have made it possible within five years.

Unfortunatly, upon his death, the government confiscated all his notes and experaments. I dout he'll ever get credit for it.

My waterproof shaver and electric toothbrush already use similar technology. You just sit them in the base, no plug required. This isn't new, it's just being generalized to work with multiple devices.

Also, while there are no wires required, it's not exactly wireless in the sense that WIFI is considered wireless internet. It requires that the item make contact with the charger's base and is not actually broadcasting power any significant distances.

There have to be some adverse health effects with all the waves passing through us each day...

Fantastic. No more cords. Bring it on.

I recommend testing all of your electronic devices to see what your exposure might be.

"Its technology is based on principles of magnetic induction, renders traditional conductive charging technology obsolete, in favor of an entirely new energy distribution process."

This sounds convenient and iPods can't get cancer.........

There have been a fair number of epidemiological studies in the area of childhood brain cancer and leukemia all of which indicate an association with EMFs - two to three times the number of cases - at magnetic field levels above 2-3 milliGauss (mG). This implies, that EMF levels below that are safer than levels above that. However other have suggested guideline levels of 1 mG or even 0.65 mG.

How much energy is lost in this type of transfer? If the loss is too high it's not worth it for the masses.

It's a great idea, but the human body was not designed to be exposed to such high levels of electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) & stay healthy. R & D is getting too expensive & time consuming these days, but consumers are a dime a dozen. Unleashing an uncontained (wireless) bombardment of such deadly power needs to be examined far more closely before humans become the test subjects of such experiments.

It's a very old concept... It's the reason they killed Tesla...

and it is illegal in all 50 States...

All you are doing is inducing voltage...

    Here's how to do it:

    _______________________________________

    000000000000000000000000000000000000000

Make a tight wound coil 10" (25.4cm) in diameter and 18.72" (5.7m) long with #16 copper wire; this will make an inductor that will resemble the resonance of the 60Hz AC current radiating through your overhead electrical lines.

Lay this coil parallel to the electrical lines on the ground (or where none will see it) and the current will be induced into the coil and from there you can feed it into your house...

adjustments to the coil may have to be made due to ohmic losses in the power lines themselves... when in doubt make the coil longer as the wave form at 60Hz is close to 3.5 miles long; also phase adjustments must be made if there are more than one power line overhead, it is just simple a transformer...

lets be clear the "power mat" is not wireless per say. you still need the mat and the item (and possible a secondary module from the looks at CES) to make it work. You are probably getting more RF and EMFs from your wireless mouse and keyboard then this, but that remains to be seen I have not read fully up on it yet. I would be more worried about your microwave and cellphone then this.

try reading up on it here -

We live in a sea of magnetic waves and that is unlikely to ever change and I have lived longer and easer than my Great Grandfather.
when you tune in to a TV or radio station you are transmitting electrical energy with out wires. Every transformer does it also so it is nothing new. The trick is doing it in useful amounts at reasonable distances.
Generally the higher the frequency the more energy is transmitted but efficacy drops rapidly at distances over one wave length.
