West Virginia tops the nation in per capita prescription drug overdoses, and police believe even more people will become addicted — and die — if the problem does not stop.
“We have to do this in education and in the home, from the pulpit and to the street,” said Ron Booker, coordinator of the TRIDENT drug task force that operates in Raleigh and Fayette counties. “It’s an epidemic, and it’s the worst in West Virginia. It’s going to take our communities to stop it.”
According to 2007 congressional testimony from Leonard J. Paulozzi, a medical epidemiologist for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, West Virginia had the highest fatal and unintentional drug overdose rate in the nation — 16.7 per 100,000 population — during 2004.
The state medical examiner’s office reported 2,758 overdose deaths between 2001 and 2007, according to statistics provided by Booker. Suicides were excluded in those numbers. The vast majority of people who died used a combination of different drugs.
More than 600 died in 2007 alone, Booker noted.
“If more than 600 people died from murders, I’m sure every household would be discussing prevention,” he said. “People would be talking about environments, how not to be shot and prevention measures. Law enforcement would increase their activities.
“People are selling more prescription drugs than illegal drugs like cocaine and marijuana. The demand is now astronomical.”

Prescription drugs/ or any synthetic drug either prescribed by the doctor or the street kills. Try the holistic alternative.

The abuse of prescription drugs is the fastest growing addiction... The problem being the lack of discretion with writing prescriptions and the online stores that allows for opiates to be delivered right to your home.
I mean, I got 3 of 4 wisdom teeth taken out a few months ago. I was given a Rx for 500 mg hydrocodone with TWO refills...and then when I got the last one taken out...I was given another RX for 750 mg with an additional refill. So, if I decide to take all the refills prescribed I could have five bottles of generic vicodin laying around.
That is a lot of unneeded medication. - 1 year ago

All you have to do is turn your t.v. on for more than ten minutes or listen to the radio for the same amount of time youll see that the drug companies are shoving everything from sex pills to sleep aids down our throats constantly to make a dollar and this is the outcome. When i was in high school (which wasnt long ago) i remember a huge scandal were ADHD drug companies were giving % to doctors who prescribes them to people, within a few months of the drug Ridilin (not sure if thats spelled correctly) coming onto the market over half the kids i knew were prescribed it.... are we really gonna keep letting this happen. In my uneducated medical opinion Methadone clinics and such institutions are enabling our government to become the worlds most powerfull drug dealer. Last time i checked pot was ILLEGAL but your gonna let people line up at 6 am at some clinic to get LEGAL HEROIN? i know thats not the only drug thats a problem but its becoming a major business and some drugs on the market today are not even approved by the FDA. Prescription drugs are very dangerous and can cause major problems even if no one is dying from there use like birth deffects and liver problems and im sure many more. I would love for there to be a monitoring system on some of these drugs, one that might actually monitor the doctors prescribing them as much as the use of the patients.

Cannibis is absolutly impossible to overdose on,which enrages me they would even think of using such a typical way catching peoples eyes.get your facts straight people, marijuana has nearly no negative side affects AND Absolutly nobody has ever died from using it.Only foolish people who drive while under the ifluence or do stupid activities while die, there has never been a recorded death from the consumption of it.EDUCATE YOURSELVES! ~Faithful Supporter Of Marijuana Rights -LearnTheTruth

Well I do, and that was why it didn't make any sense, especially since there was no statistic on there saying anything about ganga.
I know all of these things.
I posted a reply yesterday and there was a leaf on there, now there is a pile of pills......

"pot" on the other hand is near impossible to overdose on. in fact that best way to kill your self with weed is to slit your throat, and shove as much down there before you die.
then again people will do alot of crazy things these days. - 1 year ago

So we're talking about oxycodone right? Not penicllin.
If that is what we're talking about when we say "prescription drugs" then the problem we're discussing here is drug abuse and the inherit dangers of powerful opiates, whether they be heroine, morphine or oxycodone.
In which case its weird to say "prescription drugs". As if their having been prescribed at some point is the root of the problem. That's misleading in the same way the government misleads us about drugs.
The problem is not so much the source of our drugs as our lack of effective measures to treat drug addiction.
