The debate continues unabated in Washington even today, concerning First Amendment rights to free speech vs. ‘desecration’ of the U.S. flag. But let’s be clear on one thing. Flying the U.S. flag upside down is not disrespecting, let alone desecrating, the flag. From my perspective, defecating, urinating, or trampling upon, flying underneath a foreign flag, and possibly malicious burning of the flag constitute desecration of the U.S. flag

    • Flags are a product of nationalism. Nationalism is nothing more than a religion-like system applied to a government/nation-state. Nationalism/patriotism/religion has no place in official policy (like law).

    • A nation in distress is what we are, I have no problem having served 3 years for this country to see the flag hanging upside down. It's what I served for, your right to voice or show your opinion about our country's problems.

    • a ship in trouble can fly its flag upside down so that other ships can come to its aid but its not normal to fly the flag upside down on land!
People, including presidents should not write on flags.

    • flags are dumb, theyre just symbols defining a group of imaginary lines that someone drew up two hundred years ago. what makes anyone different just because they live on the opposite side of an imaginary line? hang em upside down and sacrifice a lamb underneath......whats the difference

    • Land of the free......?

I get a lot of flack for criticizing america on these boards but man it is almost impossible not to look at america and shake your head.

You guys need to find some common sense.

Every single day I read more stories of regular people in America having their lives destroyed because of something that is a non-issue in any other free nation.

      What's going on guys?

    • flying the flag upside down means distress. The nation is in distress. If anyone ever saw Rage against the machine in concert, they probably would have seen this.

It is i no way disrespectful. In fact i think it is rather patriotic. One could say our nation is always in distress, something always needs to be changed or fixed.

There is nothing wrong with this. People just want things to change or to get better for the people and their country.

There should be nothing wrong with doing whatever you want with a flag. If you own the flag anything you do with it should be completely legal. If its not your flag, and you "desecrate it" there should be no extra penalty for the fact its a flag, only relevant property destruction fines. Same should apply to religious symbols. They unfairly get special protection under some state laws too (under the guise of "hate crimes").

    • all flags of all countries need to be respected, they are powerful symbols and not just a piece of cloth or paper! Maybe education would be better than law?

    • the flag is just a colorful sheet. I'll burn it, tred on it, and wipe my but with it... it's just a flag. if anyone thinks flag desecration shoud be a crime then thry don't diserve to call themselves americans.
