Tom Hanks is Un-American

Image

Tom Hanks made this comment recently referring to his show Big Love....

“The truth is this takes place in Utah, the truth is these people are some bizarre offshoot of the Mormon Church, and the truth is a lot of Mormons gave a lot of money to the church to make Prop-8 happen, there are a lot of people who feel that is un-American, and I am one of them. I do not like to see any discrimination codified on any piece of paper, any of the 50 states in America, but here's what happens now. A little bit of light can be shed, and people can see who's responsible, and that can motivate the next go around of our self correcting Constitution, and hopefully we can move forward instead of backwards. So let's have faith in not only the American, but Californian, constitutional process.”

So instead of just saying he disagrees with the Prop 8 vote, Mr. Hanks decides to call Mormons "Un-American." Wow.

In the same statement he calls polygamists "Some bizarre offshoot group of the Mormon Church."

What a hateful ass. A totally irresponsible comment.

    • then shouldnt there be freedom of choice in marriage for everyone? your choice if you want to marry 5 woman for wives, if you want to marry 8 men for husbands, if you want to marry one man or one woman, if you want to marry someone of your own gender, if you want to live together? or if you just want to be single, practice serial monogamy or be with one person forever and do it in a responsible manner,or if you want to marry someone younger or older (a consenting social choice) then where is the conflict?

it comes when one group try to put on uncommonsensed restrictions on another group.

my goal is to legalize marriage with appliances that help around the house such as the washing machine, TV and dishwasher and have few men around for love, sex and responsible conversation. ;-)

    • he can express his opinion everyone has the right.
but in other matters, he can espress his opinion too but
      it is questionable.

top actors petition and misinfo hurt and damage SAG opportunities and working actors.

:-) hehheee maybe that's the way it reads. is that a rhetorical question. anyway...
just meant to say that he can express an opinion but we also have the right to question it hence questionable.-open to question was my thinking.

he is a pretty good actor. we don't mind saying that he has done some great stuff. funny stuff, but he can afford to throw a sandwich.

    • Freedom of speech is un-American? Maybe under the Bush doctrine.
Like all of you haters who are allowed to have a voice here, on the street or in your government, the people of California have spoken and they have decided that they are okay with being lead by Mormon hate speech - so be it. California sucks anyway - if it didn't, they wouldn't be fleeing en masse to Portland trying to f*ck us up like their shitty little motherland.
Latinos are allowed to vote? I thought they were all illegal immigrants? Black are allowed to vote in California, too? Maybe we should try to change that embarrassing fact with another election.
Mormons are racist haters - Native Americans because they killed their mythical unicorn race, the Nephites; Africans were cursed and turned black as a curse; women are subserviant like farm animals. The saddest thing - they're spreading faster than negro gay-haters. At least I can now lump negros and Mormons together. What a joyous day for both groups, really.

    • I have respect for Tom Hanks, and in this instance I believe he is totally right.
America is supposed to be for human rights.
There will always be pockets of racism and predjudices, but on the whole, America is a country of human rights.
Unfortunately, those little pockets of racism and predjudices can make loud popping noises.

Uh, he probably won't in the future.
      He made some movies.
      I watched a couple.
      Big deal.
      He said something.
      I say things too.

    • The equation is quite simple. Any legislation that takes rights away from contributing members of our society is counter to what the Constitution stands for. If you are an American, and you believe in the idea of what our Constitution extols, then you cannot abide by inequality.

    • Whoa, this is good stuff.

First the irony of a bunch of polygamists donating to a Proposition all about marriage being between one woman and one man.

The second irony is that Tom gets flak for saying that a Proposition which restricts the rights of American citizens is un-American. Of course it's un-American.

Seriously, go read Under the Banner of Heaven and then tell me that Mormons aren't a bunch of masogonistic, quasi-pedophiliac perverts.

    • Tom Hanks should be applauded. Anyone who attempts to deny other Americans their civil rights, mormon or otherwise, is Un-American.

    • It was an irresponsible comment.

.. and since when has Tom Hanks had the power to determine who qualifies as "American"? Oh, right. The same time that celebrities figured out they could throw in their political two cents and expect to be taken seriously.

    • the polygamists portrayed are "Some bizarre offshoot group of the Mormon Church" they are the fundamentalist mormons. the church did contribute a lot of money in support of prop 8. morminism is a religion that promotes inequality as they have shown. they also proselytize more than any other religion i am familiar with which is one of my personal pet-peeves. a couple of years ago some missionaries came to my buddies door and told him that he was black because he was cursed by god. big difference? nope, not really different at all.

    • someone define "american"

because so far as i can tell, bigotry, fundamentalism and fascism are totally american. so are celebrities with opinions. and so are opinions about celebrities with opinions.

we can either define the term american by what it is, or as we wish it to be, symbolically. but as a symbol, it is whatever the hell anyone wants it to be, so there's really no use arguing.

who me? i'm just being pedantic. of course i realize that we're in the shithouse. but i don't see what's necessarily unamerican about it, except for when it's selectively defined. that was my point.

    • Stupid article stupid subject. Gay rights are stupid, I say let em do what ever it takes to get them off my TV. WHO CARES. I am starting the blow Job coalition on Thursday, I want special rights and laws enacted for me and all my male friends who love blow jobs.We want child care, so..we can get more blow jobs. We want head taught in junior high, so...17 year old girls don't fumble around and ruin it for the guy. I want proper training provided by professional porn stars so they swallow with out a griminess. And I want mandatory head in the workplace from any and all working women around at lunch time. I also want a chair mounted in all restrooms so me and my happy brethren don't have to stand, that puts too much pressure on us all. And last but not least, since I am fairly sure party members will be in the millions here in the US alone, we want our own logo. It isn't fair that the Dems get a donkey and the Repubs get an elephant and we have nothing but fond memories. We want a penis with legs and a baseball cap, with a picture of Slick Willy and a cigar on it, just a smiling that Arkansas grin. Then and only then will us head lovers be happy. No more hate, just our own happiness. Now you may think me selfish but I want my needs met and in the minds of my elected officials. IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK????

    • Well Tom,

Maybe you didn't dig into your own pockets and donate enough of your millions to this cause you seem to be so passionate about to call an entire religious group Un-American!

Maybe they donated more because they were actually more passionate than you. Maybe it meant more to them than it does to you?

What about the record turn out of African American voters who voted against gay marriage? Why are they not Un-American as well.

Or the Latinos who turned out in record numbers and overwhelmingly voted against gay marriage? Are they Un-American too? What about their religious leaders who urged and donated money?

Is it about the amount of money that you are upset at the Mormons? What about the parable of the widow's mite? Does the amount matter?

If it's about the amount of money, then why didn't you and Hollywood empty your bank accounts in support of this issue you are all so passionate about?

Looking at what you donated compared to what is in your bank account, it looks as if this issue wasn't that important to you. But now that it has been passed, it's sure easy to bitch about it, and call out millions of religious Americans, many who settled the west and fought and died in all our Wars as Un-American.

    • Tom Hanks simply pointed out the truth. He is not an a**h*** at all, and he is not being hateful. There is nothing irresponsible with pointing out that an organized religious group led the campaign and, through its members, raised the most money of any organization to pass a referendum depriving American citizens of their full civil and human rights.
