Gaza ruins beg questions of Hamas

Standing on a newly formed hillside of rubble in the destroyed Jabaliya refugee camp, five young men all claim to be resistance fighters.

"All of Gaza are mujahideen," they said.

But when asked which of them had actually fired a gun in the three week-long battle with Israel, none gave a convincing answer.

And as armed Hamas policemen return to Gaza's street-corners and traffic-lights, many in Gaza are wondering where they were when it came to fighting the Israeli Army.

Hamas still has enough power and influence here that few will criticise the Islamist movement openly.

But when Hamas called for a rally to celebrate what it has been calling a historic victory over the Israelis, the citizens of Gaza voted with their feet - they stayed at home.

In the past Hamas could easily call tens of thousands into the streets, but this time only party stalwarts could look around the devastation and believe this could be victory.

"I think the resistance is strong," said Beithar Ajar, 26, who described himself as a Hamas legal adviser.

"I think the Israeli army is very weak. Very weak."

    • It is interesting that this article is from the BBC, a news outlet that can scarcely be accused of being overly conservative, or strongly pro-Israel. One can only hope that the Palestinians of Gaza are coming to their senses and becoming disillusioned with Hamas.

      Fight under Palestinian flag and get your land back from the occupiers that are murdering your children everyday

      Someone asked me "what would you do if you had rockets falling on your house"
      and I said "I wouldnt give no one a reason to shoot at me, I wouldnt steel no ones land, I wouldnt kill no ones people, I wouldnt keep anyone prisoner, and if I was doing that to someone I would expect retaliation"

      But all in all Palestinians need to get rid of Hamas. Hamas just gives Israel a legit reason in peoples eyes to bomb and kill all the Palestinians, So Hamas is as guilty as Israel.

    • Their statements clearly show how proud, egocentric and arrogant they are. Part of what brings to their day to day, zero tolerance to other Religions, cultures and openness. Hamas needs to be dissolved.

      Oh, that old guy should know better by now and make the new generations think about Tolerance.

      I hear ya petarro. Know what though? I think the old guy's right where he belongs. Almost all by himself, sitting on the rubble of what's left of his city, with his flag in his hand. It's hard to miss the irony.

      I'm glad his demonstration didn't draw a crowd but I hope lots of folks saw him sitting there all by his lonesome; compared to the crowds he used to draw. Surely the connection between that green flag and the pile of rubble it's sitting on is getting through.

    • The big boy beats the crap out of the little boy. The little boy gets up with his black eye, busted lip and broken nose and says, I win because I'm still standing. Twisted logic by Hamas twisted minds.

      It's nice the average Palestinian is realizes this logic is crap.

    • I liked this a LOT. The article quotes:

      Israeli bombs destroyed his house, he said, but they were not the only ones to blame.

      "I blame Israel and Hamas both," he said. "I just want to live." "

      Maybe there's hope for the Palestinians yet.

    • Wonder where they are gonna have their Triumphant parade.
      It sounds like they're soldiers hid out and didn't even fight. Of course they killed a few of their own people to make the death toll larger.
