Palin to media: Leave my kids alone

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is going on the offensive against news organizations and bloggers she says are perpetuating malicious gossip about her and her children. But political observers say the former Republican vice presidential candidate can't have it both ways: trotting out the children to showcase her family values, then trying to shield them from scrutiny.

Palin's criticism also raises questions about her motivations because she has said she is open to a presidential run in 2012.

"I think she's positioning herself. She's attacking the media as a way to generate support among a base she hopes will support her," said Leonard Steinhorn, a professor of communications at American University in Washington and an expert on the presidency.

Palin shied away from interviews during the campaign, although her children often accompanied her on her travels, including her oldest daughter, Bristol, who was pregnant at the time.

But in recent weeks, she has personally reached out to media outlets such as People magazine and The Associated Press to complain about information she claimed is wrong.

She slammed reports that 18-year-old Bristol Palin and the teen's fiance are high school dropouts. The governor insists the two are not dropouts because they enrolled in correspondence courses.

The couple last month had a son — the governor's first grandchild.

The governor said she is speaking out to set the record straight, not because of any political aspirations.

    • Sarah Palin should take the advice that conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer gave her. He said that what she needed to do was to go back up to Alaska and read. That sounds like pretty good advice for Palin to me.

      Yes, I prefer someone with a higher IQ over someone who only knows how to look good in a pantsuit. Does that make me sexist?

      Palin's an idiot, and no amount of name-calling is going to change that.

      You can be bitter about the way America voted, but when it comes down to it they voted for the best candidate for the job and not who you wanted. Get over it, get over yourself, and stop whining.

      She exposed herself and her kids to the media scrutiny. With all the comments about Hillary not being able to cry foul just because she's a woman, she sure was doing that a lot herself. I think that's hypocritical as opposed to telling people the truth about her.

      And to compare her kids to those massacred and corrupted in Gaza is wrong-minded and sick. You should be ashamed of yourself for attempting to make such a weak and unbalanced arguement.

      She has been rendered irrelevant since she was exposed as unintelligent. The hope that she will be the 2012 canididate for the U.S. Presidency is laughable at best.

      If that happens, the Republicans should just prepare for Obama's second term.

    • Obviously, she's looking for a way to stay relevant, which is funny since she's been irrelevant since McCain lost the election.

      Which was about a month after he nominated her for VP.

    • That's right, because there's been so much attention on her recently, how unfair.

      A suggestion Mrs. Palin, devote 8 hours a day to reading and learning so that the next time someone asks you what Hamas is in an interview, you can actually respond coherently.

      That's a much better way to remain politically relevant, people are tired of Karl Rove politics now.

    • Hopefully she can keep talking so by 2012 she has nothing left to be on TV for, but even then am sure she will do something like swim to russia and back to get attention
