Despite returning to work only a few days after giving birth, Rachida Dati has been removed from government.
The rise and fall of Ms Dati, one of 12 children of a Moroccan labourer and his Algerian wife, has been as fast as it was foreseeable. Propelled into the Justice Ministry job after Mr Sarkozy was elected in May 2007, she was the first woman of a non-European background to occupy a key cabinet position.
The rumour mill has never been far behind her with her refusal to reveal the identity of the father of her child and her exploits whilst in office raised many an eyebrow, even in the liberal high classes of French society.
