Energy self-sufficiency realistic or not?

With domestic energy bills rising, it is tempting to think that investing in renewable energy gadgets could be a money-saving wheeze. But the more you look at it, the less it makes sense.

    • Going off the grid in most urban areas in this country is terribly expensive. However, there are a lot of independent-minded folks in countries all over the world who planned carefully, learned what they needed to know, and then stepped off the ledge in to a type of self-sufficiency many of us only dream of. In other words, it takes more than money - it takes planning, persistence, and an independent spirit.

I started to go off on a riff about how energy self-sufficient Americans were 100 years ago when I remembered that, even back then, coal - the main source of heat for the majority of the country - was controlled by a monopoly that threatened to freeze the North to death when they started running in to union strikes.

      Interesting times we live in.

    • What do you think if all your roof is made of Solar panel (Tile replacement). Then all tile companies and PG&E will go bankrupt.

    • being of of the grid takes a lot of corporate waste out of the picture as well. I don't have to call someone in India to pay a power bill who's price will continually shift so that I might lose power at my house. I have a set fee, and I'm done with beurocracy..
