I first ran across the article in WIRED magazine and thought I'd post a digital copy on current.

If you follow the link you'll learn how an ex-Google employee is planning to build colonies on the open oceans where ANYTHING goes.

Just a side note, don't we run the risk of further screwing up the oceans or is this the solution to the problem of overcrowding on land?

It's a nice mixture of both, screwing up the oceans and a solution to the problem of overcrowding on land.

This reminds me of an episode of Arrested Development.

There really is still plenty of land out there ... it just not being utilized in good ways ... look at how the population is distributed. Also there is plenty of land that many call wasteland and unsuitable for habitation. Floating in the sea does have a few advantages there are no present government claims to the high seas so you can do most anything you have a mind to and governments really can't touch you much.

Whether this is a good or bad thing depends on how these "islands" are constructed. If they are built using sustainable methods and are powered by renewable energy, i.e. solar, wind, etc, they could be very beneficial. I agree though that they are unnecessary as the world has not even com close to maxing out its land resources.

Whether we live on water or land, we're still going to be dependent on food production.

Has anyone played Bio-shock? Everyone on these islands will do lots of(performance enhancing)drugs and kill each other(with lightening and telekinesis).

Why not just build your own island, that way you can co-exist with the ocean and solve some of this 'over-crowding' problem.
