Platypus: Weird Down to the Genes
The male species can sting with their hind legs...thus this is opening up a potential areas for studying pain and why morphine does not help relieve the pain of the sting of one of these creatures...BD

Does the platypus genome have any bearing on human health? Maybe. Wes Warren, the Wash. U. geneticist who led the project, pointed to the platypus’s venomous sting as one venue for research.

“The pain is excruciating, and the duration can be up to a month,” he told the Health Blog. “We also know that if you administer morphine to these patients, it does not block or eliminate the pain.” A better understanding of why the venom hurts so much — and why morphine doesn’t help — could lead to new treatments for pain, Warren said.
