The company in Georgia that KNEW its peanut butter was contaminated is a great example of what happens when we trust business to regulate itself and don't have inspections and fines so harsh that these criminals will risk great losses when they commit these crimes.
I am sick of the weak standard for White Collar crime. There is not difference between making people sick with contaminated food and a street thug beating someone up.

Call your Rep. and Senators at tole free capital switchboard and demand safe food.
202-=224=3121 Ask for the office of your Rep. and then your Senator.
Tell their staffer you want our food safe again. -
First it was the color dye bugs, now this, what's next?

Obama needs a new FEMA cheif and he needs one fast. Someone like Holder and Clinton, a big name politician with the needed experience and high profile to not only improve the agency but inspire its demoralized staffers.
I would suggest the following
Dr. Bob Arnot. A health correspondent until 2002 for NBC, CNN, and CBS and more recently HD Net in this role he has recieved an emmy and several nominations. He has travelled to war zones and worked as a traveling doctor. He has more than a decade of disaster relief experience and was cheif medical officer of the National Emergency Services which trained over two thousand doctors in 116 hospital emergency rooms. He would generate a great rapport with the agencies first reponders and volunteers and wouldn't be scared to get into the dirt and get boots on the ground during disasters.
Dr. Howard Dean
As a four term governor he has commanded National Gaurd troops and understands the process that a Governor undertakes in disaster response. One of the worst problems with FEMA during Katrina was the poor communication between federal and local authorities. I believe that he would understand their mindset better and would have a better working relationship with them. His grassroots network of supporters and his time as the head of the DNC also equips him to navigate the politics of the situation and his name recognition and status as a progressive may be exactly what FEMA needs in order to be reinvigorated and reformed.Former Mayor Bart Perterson
Former head of the National Leage of Cities. With him you would have the Homeland Security Secratary who was head of the National Governors Conference and a FEMA director who was head of the National League of Cities. As stated before one of the biggest problems with these agencies was coordinating with State and Local authorities. I think that this choice would be a complete seachange for the better. He was a progressive mayor who served both post 9/11 and post Katrina in a city that is on the edge of Tornado Alley. He has experience dealing with large scale public safety offices and would communicate better with local police, ems, and fire safety services. He has executive experience and has a first name relationship with many of the nations mayors as head of the NLC. He has spent the last year as a professor in Harvards Urban Policy center. He would understand the nuances of working in Urban environments and I think would be an inspired choice. He also has experience on the environmental side of politics as cheif environmental aid for his states governor Evan Bayh, so he would have a working understanding of environmental public health hazzards which are often overlooked during disaster relief. Something that we became painfully clear of with FEMA trailers filled with Fermaldahyde and Arsenic. -
lol fema cant catch a break. Every manager in that peanut plant that they can prove had any knowledge of tainted product should be sentences to at least 20 years in the joint. Maybe then the next one will think next about cutting corners.

I wouldn't be shocked by this at all. See, the government has done away with people before. So, go you think that they'd care about tainted peanut butter. Remeber a few months back about the toys that were shipped here through U.S. customs..and those same people at U'S' customs let them through. And at the same time hundreds of Chinese children were poisoned. And the toys were still on American toy stores' shelves. So i am not shocked at this story at all.

Passjay, true.. It should not be shocking considering the melamine, lead, mercury and other poisen in the trash from China. Oh the anti-freeze in toothpaste. I startedusing Tom's madei n the USA.
About 2 years ago I started a buy only what is necessary, and also started buying things made by USA workers when available.
The Canadian "buy nothing day" inspired me.Still, we should be active and call the pigs who are supposed to represent us and use the remaining free speech we have. I watched the hearing about the peanut butter on C-span.
