Shepard Fairey, the artist who created the iconic Barak Obama campaign artwork that's now at the US National Portrait Gallery was arrested in Boston for two outstanding warrants (for tagging property in Boston locations with graffiti). He was on his way to DJ at an event kicking off his retrospective exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston."one of the displays in Fairey's exhibit includes a typed letter from Obama that read: "I am privileged to be a part of your art work and proud to have your support."
"Fairey was recently seen with (Boston) Mayor Thomas M. Menino in an event to promote his show, and banners raised at City Hall also announce the exhibit."

Well I love graff but just because of all the great stuff he has done recently doesn't mean that he should be immune to his past catching up with him. I'm sure he probably doesn't at all regret doing the illegal stuff, which is cool!

I'd hate to admit envy here (as a fellow designer), but for some reason, I just can't stand this guy.

yep
"Fairey, 38, of Los Angeles, is scheduled to be arraigned on the misdemeanor charges Monday in Brighton District Court, said Jake Wark, a spokesman for the Suffolk District Attorney. Wark said Fairey would also be arraigned on a default warrant related to a separate graffiti case in the Roxbury section of Boston."

This echos the Mark Ecko release of his video game a bit too much (Too convenient if you ask me). Plus he posted bail a couple hours after his "capture" so he is free. Lotta free press that is.
Still a fan though

As the article suggested, the idea of Fairey's arrest may feed his fame.
Just maybe, he'll be able to post bail and then some with the extra revenue generated from this incident.

Surely, since his art work is known after Obama's campaign he could find places that would love to have his art work on building's exposed by demolision.
We have murals done in cultural districts, downtown area's near parking garages, near museums, near schools..... he doesn't need to destroy property.
Some people can't afford to paint their houses(in town) maybe they'd like him to improvise....he can still be a rebel but artisticly. - 1 year ago

He doesn't care hes in jail, this is just some publicity that is going to boost his already illustrious career in art.
I think his artwork looks cool, and expresses my generation.

I live in the Boston area and saw one of his pieces close to the train. It was fresh a piece of his. I'm not surprised he was arrested, he should just be happy he wasn't arrested in New York.

If you don't enforce the law, the law has no meaning.
Granted, we have yet to enforce the law in regards to war crimes or treason within the Bush administration.
But just the same, if we don't enforce the law, or only enforce the law sometimes, the law is meaningless.
And if the Cops made an exception for "street art" but not vandalism, then the police would become government censors of art.

Oh man im torn on this issue.
On one hand I support the street artists movement and would want to see him freed.
but on the other hand shepard fairey is a douche who steals others art and copyrights it and then sues those who use his now stolen/copyrighted work.

Read his manifesto, check out some interviews, and I doubt you could judge him with this negative opinion. In the few cases where he has sued, it was due to the other persons integrity, not the art. By your explanation, I guess Warhol, Dali and Picasso were also douches.

I have read his website, i watched interviews, the punk is still a douche in my opinion.
Also don't compare people who are private (art gallery) artists, and fairey who is a privater hiding behind the image of 'street artist'.

I'm with the Warhol argument. Warhol took existing portraits, landscapes, and even commercial advertisements and colorized them. Added a caption, and called it art. Isn't that what's happening here?
Not that I'm defending him. He's getting arrested for graffiti, which is illegal. He should be arrested.

AswegoAsdego:
j176 as a designer I can easily say that what Fairey does is not that easy. It takes a lot of time and hard work to create his extremely detailed pieces of art. If it was so simple we'd see a lot more of it as opposed to cheap knock offs that arent nearly as good. Online its hard to see the detail but I had the extreme privilege to see one of his galleries so I could appreciate his work up close.

who thinks "douche" is most overused term of 21st century? personally, i recognize a douche to be someone who uses the word "douche"
you can't patent an idea, only the unique expression of an idea. this is precisely what Fairey did with the image of Obama

Either way it does not matter, I dont like fairley and some people do.
The bigger point is he got arrested for artwork, which is a bullshit thing to get arrested for.
Hopefully all goes well for him.

Probably because Warhol got away with it ;)
There is a great scene in Tim Robin’s movie “Cradle Will Rock” where a young Nelson Rockefeller, in 1930, ponders the perceived fiasco of Diego Rivera’s mural in the lobby of the Rockefeller Center that he just ordered to be destroyed.
He decides that from now only non-figurative art would be encouraged because it is by definition insignificant so not dangerous to society & easily speculated on.
