A major row erupted last week when one of the ministers claimed that taking ecstasy was no more dangerous than riding a horse. (at the link above).
I don't think ecstasy is as dangerous as other class A drugs (such as heroin and crack) but I wonder if a reclassification could send the wrong message to the kids...?
-
long term use kills seritonin in the brain, believe me this is from experience but i still think everyone should have the experience at least once.
-
This is similar to the debate surrounding reclassifying marijuana. The government disagreed with the advisory body's recommendation that the drug stay as a Class C drug instead of getting an upgrade to Class B.
Part of it is down to public perception, I think. Drugs are such hot topics with voters, especially a large part of the Middle England vote that Labour needs to court for reelection, that it's too risky for the government to face the wrath of massive tabloid outrage with controversial regrading.
-
Honestly all I have to do is look at the consequences other people have to go through to see that it's just not something I wanna do or experience.

This is just like marijuana, the demand is there and it'll never go away. It would be a lot better though if it was legalized and regulated, that way the government can produce them with pure MDMA, something dealers aren't doing anymore to cut costs. And the public would rest assured knowing there's no traces of poison or anything else in them. Not only that, but they can tax the shit out of MDMA, and the demand will still stay high as hell.

the amount of times reclassification occurs is ridiculous. it is all confusing. basically drugs are bad for your health and don't get caught doing them or your going to jail! On a side note E looks pretty.

why do ppl need drugs? there are plenty of other things to do
i understand going threw a teenage stage and "trying" things, but after the age of 20 people just need to grow up.

Maybe there’s a big medicine company that’s going to come out with his own nice version of ecstasy. So, they need to make ecstasy look nicer.
Wait and see, they going to give you one free for every 3 red bulls you buy in a party!

Education and responsibility should always be at the forefront of any treatment.
Grading at all sends the wrong, perhaps they should be graded based on the amount of criminal activity!
-
I think people are looking at this the wrong way. The type of Ecstasy that is being described is not, by any means close to street Ecstasy. MDMA, which is the chemical compound found in Ecstasy, is what is trying to be reclassified. Street Ecstasy will still kill people because of all the additives such as crystal meth.

absolutely ridiculous sod the classifications. de criminalize all drugs tax the fuck out of them and educate people realistically. Who are they to say want anyone puts in there own body. Alcohol is the most dangerous drug of all but thats fine because it is made in the uk and taxed?

This is NOTHING like the argument over Marijuana!!!
Pot is a naturally grown HERB, created by God(Nature) without any human interference....as a matter of fact, it's SO prolific, governments can't even eradicate it.
MDMA, is a MAN-MADE CHEMICAL, which while relatively harmless (compared to other man-made psychoactives) to MOST people, when taken RESPONSIBLY, can STILL cause permanent changes in brain chemistry, and even death, in extreme cases, due to things like dehydration or BAD choices while high ! -
Education is the key. Educate youth with true facts about drugs rather than political propaganda. Then if a youth decides to try a drug he/she is educated on the short and long term effects of the drug and can hopefully make a rational decision.

I had a researcher friend who worked at Stanford.
Part on her job involved using MDMA to kill parts of a rats brain.-

It is a human right to undertake any activity even and perhaps despite of the risks involved. People do dangerous sports and sometimes die. Some people decide to take a recreational drug knowing full well that it may be addictive and could cause them harm. It says in this article that the total number of deaths from drugs, which includes anti-depressants and painkillers, is 3,095 and yes, every one is a tragedy. But this pales into insignificance if you compare it to the result of smoking tobacco - 112,337 deaths in 2002 in the UK, and for alcohol, 8,386 deaths in 2005 but is anyone saying these two lethal drugs should be classified - hell no!
Is that because they both contribute to the Treasury vast sums of money or that classifying them would be political suicide? This is pure politics - what must be said and done to "appear" to be tough on what the middle classes think the government should be tough on. Yes, ecstasy is as statistically dangerous as horse riding and our right to choose to ride a horse is not in question. Why then are drugs classified at all?

Just out of curiosity, was ecstasy created purely for recreational use or is there a prescription use for it as a medication to treat something like acute depression or bipolar disorder (doesn't seem to quite fit that disorder, but then I have no idea what the drug actually does)? I have always assumed, from the name, that the primary affect of the drug is to elevate mood. Is that correct? That would seem to explain why it would be mixed with drugs that caused alertness and/or wakefulness, so that one could stay conscious to enjoy the elevated mood for as long as possible?
Sorry if these questions sound "clinical." While I personally don't use, I have many friends who possess intellects for which I have great respect and who DO use -- mostly the occasional drink or a little pot -- so I know there must be SOME thrill associated with the stuff. They just make me want to eat and go to sleep -- and I enjoy being awake and not fat too much to find that experience particularly compelling...but I am nonetheless curious about how others experience these things.

Although I expect you have already been there go to MDMA on Wikipedia where it will tell you everything you need to know about ecstasy.
It was "proper" drug once but someone found that its use could be recreational too. What the above doesn't say is how exactly it went from being a drug used in psychotherapy to the drug of choice at raves.
