PETA dresses up in KKK robes outside the Westminster Dog Show
The animal rights group, which every year stages a protest at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, had two of its members dress in Ku Klux Klan garb outside Madison Square Garden on Monday.
Their goal, according to a post on the PETA website, was to draw a parallel between the KKK and the American Kennel Club. "Obviously it's an uncomfortable comparison," PETA spokesman Michael McGraw told the Associated Press.
But the AKC is trying to create a "master race" when it comes to pure-bred dogs, he added. "It's a very apt comparison."
The group passed out brochures implying the Klan and AKC have the goal of "pure bloodlines" in common.
"I can't speak for everyone, but the vast majority of the people exhibiting and handling and showing at Westminster are more interested in the health of dogs than anything else," Westminster spokesman David Frei told the AP.
"We want to produce the next generation of healthy and happy dogs," he said, "not just for the show ring but for the couches at home."
Bystander Fatima Walden told the AP the KKK imagery was inappropriate no matter what the message.
"They could have used something else as an example," she said. "You should be considerate to everybody."
Other than a shouting match during the hour-long protest, police said the scene remained calm...

Remind me to never f%#K with PETA

I don't know who they hired to come up with new campaigns lately, but this last year has seen some shockers. Breast milk ice cream, veggie sex advert, renaming fish to Sea Kittens... They win points for creativity, that's for sure. But I think PETA deserves the WTF award for 2008/2009.
-
It's incredibly stupid things like this that are why the "Majority" of Vegans/Vegetarians do not support PETA and instead support local and smaller scale Animal Rights/Welfare groups or groups like Food Not Bombs.
PETA is the biggest bunch of fuck ups in the movement and I always have to apologize to everyone on their behalf when their shenanigans reach these new heights. It's embarassing and it tends to make people think we are all crazy assholes hellbent on pissing off everyone.
Please, please, please... if you are a Veg don't give your money to PETA. There are much better ways to spend your money that actually produce results.
-
I would prosecute PETA if I could
-
I don't really see the comparison...
Surprised nobody got knocked out...
-
Is the American Kennel Club killing “imperfect” puppies or something? Because it is not, then I think that PETA needs to invest his time better.
I don’t understand, is dog breeding wrong according to those people?
-
I just lost any respect I had for PETA. To compare the treatment of animals that lack sapience to that of the KKK's actions on human beings is intellectually dishonest and irrational.
Definition of sapience

PETA doesn't even want pets in the home so this is understandable. Their methods are always over the top though.
You can hate on them all you want but nothing they do is spurious.
-
Just another example of how taking such an extremist position only to grab attention can backfire on the progress made for the cause that is trying to be supported.
No matter how worthy the case for animal abuses is, that only gives it a bad name by their association with it.
That's what happens when fanaticism and zealotry are allowed to become the priority in any cause or philosophy. Since the fundamentalism and extremist viewpoint overwhelms any validity that the arguments of the philosophy has at its core.
-
PETA is nothing more than the Westboro baptist church of animal rights groups. I say they're only good for pointing and laughing at.
-
yea this is stupid and annoying but what do u expect from PETA. honestly how do they not realize that just about everything they do ruins their image turning people against their cause much more than advancing it???
-
Ingrid Newkirk just needs to get laid & maybe then PETA will simmer down.

I might not agree with all their statements, but i'm glad there's someone making them. I'm glad they have a loud and noticeable dissent on many topics.
Did you honestly think that they wanted to make ice cream with women's milk? No, but the point was that human milk ice cream would be (oddly) gross and at the same time cow's milk ice cream is just delicious and normal. Cows milk is weird as hell but we're all used to the concept, but human milk is weird and foreign unless you're nursing.
The superbowl commercial's point was pretty obvious...
Maybe for this dog show, the 'master race' idea is just trying to pay attention to the accelerated artificial selection put on dog breeds to be pure and beautiful, and then showing them off like property. Animals are not for entertainment.
The KKK thing was just publicity by making some vague comparison between the two.
-
I completely understand the comparison and it is a valid one. But, from far away, it likely just looked like a clan rally.
I would feel sick if I dressed up as a clan member, even for a good cause.

PETA is outrageous to get attention, it is a political strategy and it works. Is anyone else familiar with the old adage, "any publicity is good publicity"?
However, the larger point is being lost. The problem with the AKC is that they are ruining the canine gene pool. Breeding for conformation is a horrible practice that should be ended. There are numerous examples of how breeding for conformity produces dogs that are not healthy of body nor sound of mind..
Dogs should be bred for health and temperament, not some out dated Victorian ideal.

PETA pisses me off generally. They seem to be the least capable advocate for animal rights, but the most attention getting. Their passion is wasted on insulting ad schemes and protests. And the ALF....

As a southern man, nothing pisses me off more than anything using the clan. They are a symbol of everything wrong with this country. I have spent my whole life dealing with these a-holes and for one I wish they would go away. There is no excuse for using this kind of symbology. Hate is not a marketable item.
-
Wow imagine that, PETA diminishing human suffering and discrimination to promote its agenda, gee its not like they did that with the hollocaust or slavery. Just for this I'll be donating the Kennel club, that I don't even agree with just to make sure this event happens again next year and pisses these insensitive people off again.
-
And they've done it again...
-
I think some people are not looking at the big picture. Comparing the WDS to the KKK is nothing more than group demonization which is the exact same thing the KKK did to minority groups. So maybe those protestors are just showing their true colors in donning the garb of a hate group to make a widely idealistic statement.
At any rate group demonization is just plan stupid. No one should resort to calling an individual a murdering racist unless that’s exactly what they are.
-
Talking about the KKK is not uncomfortable, what PETA has become is reality-tv. PETA, has taken steps to attack issues which are close to others passions, in search of support for their gains. I applaud their tactics. But sorry, we all are not that naive. You have just lost my support. I had agreed with most of your doctrine up until now. I love animals, even those that sometimes frighten me. But you want to compare the ideals of master race to that of wealthy individuals with to much free time. Those dogs are being exploited, but, I can assure you they are well taken care of, more so than a African-American man in South Carolina. Can you explain to me how any animal feels if you call it a "dumb nigger" or "porch monkey"? When that animal can tell you let me know.

I fucking hate those self-righteous idiots.
A simple Google search will reveal their hypocrisy.

I guess I just don't see how militancy and harkening back to terrible, human-rights abusing organizations makes people want to listen... seems counter-intuitive, repulsive, even.
As a purebred dog owner, I can say that I did NOT base my adoption decision on show quality bloodlines. I wanted a healthy dog whose parents were treated with respect and not abused reproductively to make a buck. In fact, my pug is about as abnormal as they come.
PETA should hone their efforts on puppy mills, not responsible purebred breeders and lovers. Or maybe, they could follow in the lines of Bob Barker and endorse a public campaign to spay and neuter pets?
-
PETA is a terrible, self-righteous (as bandit said), HYPOCRITICAL organization. They disgust me. They try to impose their radical beliefs tooooo aggressively. Watch the 'Penn & Teller: Bullshit' episode on PETA if you don't understand what I mean.
