"Speaking as a computer scientist, I view all of these as sort of poor man's email systems," he said this afternoon at Morgan Stanley's technology conference. What's he talking about?

Bit of an implausible insult to come from a computer scientist. Sounds like his viewpoint we're coming through gritted teeth.

They're both free services anyway. If its such a bad idea why are there so many people using it
-
If poor men only send emails with 140 characters or less, then yes.
-
what is he on about?!? sooo defensive. and it's hilarious that he got the 140 / 160 thing wrong. shows that he is out of touch.
-
i think twitter is soooooooo boring and pointless, what is the point of it all? people should be ashamed of clogging up memory space with their drivel. get off your iphone and get a life. Dweeb.

I wonder if the Google CEO sees Twitter as a bit of a sore subject, considering he doesn't own it yet...
I also think it's a bit of an unfair comparison, surely online text messages would be a better description...?
-
you're right "poor mans email" doesn't even make sense as email is free and twitter is usually practiced on a mobile. I'm sick of google, they are soooo smug. lets all go back to yahoo!

A response from Twitter by beccatigger (@becskr)

We had some more responses from Twitter - where people think there's less spam (at the moment) and it's up more than Gmail ;-)

I personally only use twitter at the mo to post status updates on bebo which is blocked on the college PCs.
I do struggle to see the point of it, everything you can do on it you can do on bebo, which you can do on your phone for free on most networks here.

I asked the same question on Twitter. "Nonsense!" was basically the reply, in union.
-
yes, it's true, due to the credit crunch, I can't afford more than 140 characters...

Poor? You pay for neither so money is out of the equation! If anything, he is the poor man as his indexing of websites takes weeks.

H'mmm, as Tim O'Reilly tweeted yesterday "Wow, the way Eric Schmidt is talking down twitter, Google must really see it as a threat. http://tinyurl.com/azasr5 (via @perryevans)"
-
In engineering, "poor man" doesn't mean what you think. His quote and the whole article was taken so far out of context because of that.
He's not insulting Twitter, he's complimenting Twitter for its innovation, but asking how it's going to evolve or survive, and then even goes on to ask if e-mail clients like Gmail should start including Twitter-like features.
