More US farmers planting non-GMO soybeans this year

This is truly good news. American farmers are reversing the trend. They see the high cost of GM soybeans economically and environmentally and I hope this trend continues. Keep on voicing your support for American farmers to continue this trend, and don't let up on the USDA about labelling products with GMO ingredients. We are making a difference!

Monsanto, your day of reckoning is coming.

That is heartening news. Let's hope that this trend spreads to all GM crops.

It's an empowering start. Hopefully more consumers will pay attention to these safer choices, see the bigger picture of potential health consequences & ultimately make the right purchase, supporting the “healthier” corporations.

This is good news GMO'S should be legally banned. Look at what Chavez just did to Cargill. Cargill and Monsanto and a few others should be held accountable for trying to force farmers to pay higher prices for thier products. These companies are a real sign of American greed to the upmost for sure. GMO'S cause more problems than they solve and are an unstable source of food. Don't screw with Mother Nature in the name of Greed. Capatalism gone amuck.

Finally something america gets a thumbs up for, are we that shitty? I feel like we do some pretty great things in this country, tragically people seem to only remember the bad. This is a great step forward, and hopefully it will transfer to other crops. Although it seems these company that make the GMO's have power, and have you ever tried to take a meat from a pack of starving wolves? Thats what its going to be like getting these company to stop doing what there doing.

NexRL: That is true, we have a fight on our hands. I think it is past time we take it on. Our Earth is more precious than Hugh Grant's (the CEO not the actor ;-)) stock portfolio. I can't wait to see their profits tumble even a little bit. Let's hope it has a domino effect. The only way to fight this now is through the one thing they hold most dear: their profits. It is very heartening to see farmers standing up to this. GMOs are simply not proven safe and are an environmental catastophe in the making. We can help them as well by boycotting GMOs and demanding labelling.

I think this trend is more likely due to international business pressures rather than domestic political pressures (i.e.: international rejection of U.S. GMO exports). Its business for the farmers, not politics.

We'll never see a GMO label in the U.S.. Monsanto & other corporate cronies are the USDA (and the patent office for that matter). GMO is here to stay. Its subsidized.

Only domestic solution to GMO: Consumers, vote with your dollars! Buy ORGANIC! Its worth it for your bodies, the nation, and the world.

is there a list of products that use GMOs somewhere?

I think we will see a GMO label in the US. We simply have to keep the pressure on, because it is making headway. It's about believing in the power of the people and Democracy and persevering. No corporation should be stronger than that. Ever.

You can start by looking at this petition and signing it to take action to see the day when foods in this country as they are in many throughout the world now are labelled to show GM ingredients so that consumers can make an informed choice about what they wish to put into their bodies.

Our voices are making an impact.

Thank you to the nearly 100,000 organic consumers, including 50,000 new OCA network members who joined the Stop Vilsack campaign, and who called for Merrigan's appointment and a change in direction for the USDA. Thanks to your hard work and ongoing pressure, the Obama Administration and Secretary of Agriculture Vilsack are apparently responding to OCA and our allies' calls for major reform in the food and farm sector, including:

President Obama's budget plan includes a $1 billion a year increase in funding for U.S. child nutrition programs including school lunches.
Secretary Vilsack has called for government support for farmers using alternative energy, such as wind and solar, as well as those converting to organic farming practices. Vilsack also has called for cuts in taxpayer subsidy payments to large farms.
Vilsack has pledged the USDA’s support in ending racial discrimination in the farm sector, specifically condemning past discrimination in limiting credit opportunities for African-American farmers.
The USDA's National Organic Program has cracked down on companies spiking organic fertilizer with prohibited synthetic additives.
Vilsack has launched the USDA People's Garden Project with the goal of creating community gardens at each USDA facility worldwide.
On this celebratory note, we'd also like to thank the thousands of you who supported Hilda Solis for Labor Secretary. Finally confirmed on February 24, Secretary Solis, the department's first Latino chief, is a longtime ally of farm workers , and workers in general, and is certainly supportive of OCA's goal to eliminate labor exploitation in the $60 billion organic and natural food and farming sector. Secretary Solis supports the Employee Free Choice Act, legislation that would level the playing field for workers trying to unionize in workplaces where employers are hostile to organized labor. OCA's experience working with the United Farm Workers and the Teamsters has shown us that passage of the Employee Free Choice Act is necessary to make our food system truely sustainable.

OCA's support for the green jobs movement has also yielded results. President Obama has guaranteed at least $500 million for the Green Jobs Act in the stimulus package.

What's next? Keep the pressure on! Congress, President Obama and Secretary Vilsack need to hear from you on key issues

I'll be remailing my letter on GMOS to President Obama this coming week and sending copies to members of Congress. I am also going to be writing letters to some local newspapers, and am planning to use Earth Day as a way to call for healthier food for a healthier environment.

its good to see that more americans are eating soy-based products and maybe less meat. Afterall soybeans have more protein then meat, can be used in virtually everything and are a great snack. Mmmm. salted, backed, any way theyre good. Only one thing remains, i'm making soy fruit smoothies for breakfast!
