Dr. Manhattan's penis offends Conservative critics

"The Christian Film & Television Commission"? What a surprise!- but seriously, with all the violence, social commentary and questioning god there was in Watchmen, what they had a problem with was all the penis?

It's not like they show dick for the sake of showing dick. There's a significant point in Dr. Manhattan being naked.

And there are numerous movies displaying female nudity that are rated R. Why does penis get all the bad rap?

I'm not offended by penis. I have one. Alongside half of the population of every vertebrate on the planet. In fact, some animals have two penises, known as hemipenes.

That means that the number of pensis in the world is GREATER than the number of animals that have them.

My penis is not blue though. Maybe that's the reason they're offended-- Blue penis is offensive to conservatives.

It wasn't gratuitous, but it makes a point about the character of Dr. Manhattan, and how unlike humans he's become.

I gather there is more resistance to this movie in the red penis states?

Im suprised they didnt complain about the homosexuality, sex scenes, female nudity, and constant gore.

I'm not conservative but I am offended by the unfair ratio of penises to boobs. Accumulated through the entirety of the movie, we probably see about 5 whole minutes of penis and man-ass, but we only see some shadow-obscured breasts for about 10 seconds.

They're offended because they don't want to admit they found his pulsing blue demi-manhood oddly arousing.

There is a bit of commentary on such subjects in watchmen. Silhouete is murdered for her sexuality and is considered far more perverse in her time period than is the fascist rapist and murder we all know and love as the comedian. The brutality of the actions of the characters is parleyed into comentary about the motivations for costumed crimefighting, including voyeruism, fettishism, masochism, and in the case of several characters ether implicitly or explicitly homosexuality.

You can show bones splintering through flesh, and pregnant women getting shot without the threat of an NC17 rating but touch upon the linkages between sexuality and violence and try and humanize sexual "deviance" and your instantly in uncomfortable teritory. If its human nature than everyones sin becomes no ones sin. That scares conservatives more than anything.

@saladin Srsly though, you are exactly right. We have found that it's usually the rampaging conservatives who rally against penis shots that end up with male prostitutes or playing footsie in a men's bathroom later down the line...

@tbarski -I don't really think so though; America is generally pretty homophobic and VERY prudish when it comes to nudity in entertainment...more and more films are starting to show penises and I wonder what the reaction will be. This story is really more in the area of film and art and how they are accepted and understood by the public, but it also shows the strange moral priority of religious groups.

America is prudish compared to other western nations. Heck most of Europe has cable porn. So what if they show the guy's dick? It's a fact of life. Men have penises.

I'm a Christian and it upsets me that they're making fools out of us. It's rated R, obviously there's going to be objectable content. If you don't think it's appropriate then don't see it. Simple as that. Let's be real. The only R movie all Christians would agree is justified would be "The Passion of the Christ".

I can't say it's right to go see movies with nude scenes but as an artist I guess I'm more desensitized than alot of Christians so it doesn't bother me. We're all going to see a naked person eventually, they need to stop acting like it's never going to happen. All that matters is what you do with it. If it causes temptation for you, then don't put yourself in the situation, but don't assume it causes the same problem for everyone.

these are the same asinine, uptight, repressed perverts who demonstrated against showing Michelangelo's "David" and whose poster boy, john Ass-croft, wasted 23,000.oo of taxpayer's money to put a curtain over the statue of justice to cover its bare breast.

Im a conservative and i think this is ridiculous. I was a bit surprised when i saw three blue penises, but it is essential to the both arts that the film be as accurate as possible when it comes to the graphic novel. Besides, Dr. Manhattan's entire body recreated itself, i doubt nature would have just forgotten to recreate the penis.
