15 shot dead at German school

Image...
This sounds more like something that would happen here in the states. A gunman dressed in black combat gear has opened fire on a German secondary school in south-west Germany - the gunman then fled into a nearby town where police say he is still on the loose. Currently there is a search underway to find him. 15 people are thought to be dead at this time.

What is the motivation behind senseless violence like this?

***Update from CNN :

"BERLIN, Germany (CNN) -- A 17-year-old former student dressed in military gear killed at least 10 people when he opened fire at a school in southwest Germany on Wednesday morning, police said.

Citing police sources, German media reports said the gunman was later killed by police.

Many others were wounded in the shooting in the small town of Winnenden, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) northeast of Stuttgart.

The exact number of casualties was still not known, police said."

The number of dead people is now 17.What causes people to act the way they do,these horrible incidents are,as I see it,a matter of "Zeitgeist",a sign of the time we live in.Simply outlawing the possession of fire-arms is definitely no solution,as long as people don't change there will always be individuals so unbalanced or/and frustrated who will find a way to go on a killing spree.

This kid had killed 14 teachers, two schoolgirls and one of the first policemen on the scene before taking his own life.

I can't imagine what made him do this, besides that his parents owned guns legally.

The fact that his parents owned 18 fire-arms,has probably contributed to this tragedy, however,if someone is obsessed with killing,in an impuls or not,out of frustration, underachievement, lack of friendship,a craving for attention, possitive or negative, feelings of lonrliness, being lost in an complicated society, hatred or whatever other reason, vaid or not, such a person will always be capable of fullfilling his morbid dream of killing,a fire-arm would be easy, but a sword, knife,a brick or a rope or just his hands will also do.So outlawing the posession of arms is no solution, that doesn't remove the deeper cause, the feeling of not belonging to the fellowship of men,not being appreciated etcetera. There must have been omens, that this was an accident waiting to happen, too bad, nobody noticed these signs and cried wolf.Maybe now that this kind of incident has happened again, people will be more alert.

Hey, and Germany has gun control! The anti-gun Democrats who want to disarm us "for our own good" will not take weapons out of everyone's hands.

It is all too sad what my childrens world has become, They live in fear of a kid who lacks enough hugs in their life, Or didn't take kindly to constructive grief therefore lack of the social beating we took and grew from, All to sad when you loose your life because you didn't know what would set them off... I long for the day when It was You got picked on and instead of gaining anger you gained a personality..... I long for a day My children can learn to agree to disagree, When your voice gains you any enemy, Instead of a meeting of minds senseless acts take their place.. God Bless Us all..

yeah buddha, we are saying the same thing.....the above comments made the suggestion that shootings at schools were american and this kid was copying them..... Cant we just say: "hey this kid never learned proper coping skills??"

It has nothing to do with access to guns or whether or not "murder is regulated" (ia had a good long laugh at that......how the f**k are you going to regulate murder??)

Some people are just crazy, or just never learned how to deal with their feelings at all, let alone positively.....Do we know this kids background?? Was he put on meds?? Was there warning signs that were ignored?? I mean come on people, the Va Tech murder happened one year TO THE DATE that guns were made illegal on campus.......Gun control will not stop a crazy person from finding a gun and shooting people.....Why are we led to believe that terrorists can make a nuclear (or should I say nuculer..hehe) bomb the size of a suitcase if the ability to make (IDK where that guy thought we give people nukes...) nuclear weapons is restricted??

Well,I remember the days when here in Holland,we considered these killing-sprees as all-American things. But that was long ago, before the almost total globalisation and what's maybe even more important, long before the internet-age,which made every occurance happen almost simultaniously all over the world.I can't think of this kind of tragedies during for instance the sixties or seventies.Strange thing, the world has become smaller and smaller, people should be more united than ever, but instead selfishness has become a virtue and once againwe consider ourselves to be the center of the universe.SIGH.

I think a lot of it has to do with the lack of compassion and depersonalization that is inherent to 21st century society.

That and I think Columbine changed things. Once one person did it, anyone who thinks similar to how they do will consider an option they might have thought was too extreme or too risky before.

So the shooter just happened to kill almost exclusively women and girls. Right.

Let me guess what the police will find out about him: he's not particularly tolerant of their gender. Just a wild guess!

I don't think this is a new 21st century or societal development - that's too simple a scapegoat. Simply blaming the world is a selfish way to criticize personal issues. When we know little about the situation or state of mind of the shooter, making assumptions makes us speculators from our greatly narrow perspective of this tragedy. We don't know why he did it, guesses are merely serving our own entertainment and self-explanation of events - for our own satisfaction and pleasure.
