Smoking ban lifted for world leaders at G20

Image...
Smoking, though completely banned in UK public spaces and work places, is to be allowed for world leaders at the forthcoming G20 economic conference next month.

The government has amended existing legislation to allow heads of state, politicians and diplomats to light up in special smoking rooms at London's Excel Exhibition Centre.

The Daily Mail has predictably gone nuts, relishing the accusations that Labour is employing 'double standards', having vigorously enforced the smoking ban for the general public. Infuriatingly, I'm inclined to think the paper's actually right.

its one rule for them and one rule for us!
This smoking ban is actually rather good fun because it makes period dramas soooo much more interesting to watch now. Watching people smoke INDOORS gives me a real tingle in the nipple

Talk about blowing smoke where the sun don't shine.

We went to FOWA (Future of Web Apps) expo and they didn't let me smoke in a special little 'smoking room.'

What makes politicians so special that they can't walk 50 yards for a smoke.

Ya I think it's for security reasons... but I think this could set a precedent that the Government might take some serious flack from the pub industry and from the British public.

They should be staying in the damn room and talking things out, not popping out every five minutes - let 'em smoke I say

What's more, as a smoker i reckon that this will soothe the inevitably frayed nerves, keep people focused and encourage engagement in the discussion. It will also remind them of how cool it must've been to work in offices in the '70s.

It's one conference, you whining, moaning maggots (non-smokers)- smokers have to put up with your cotton-wool lungs for the whole year.

Listen guys its difficult running the planet and sometimes you just need to have a puff and unwind.

Also what's the point in being a world leader if you cant bend the rules to suit your needs?

I'm with Gordon on this one, screw you!

I agree with abbym0308 that this could be for security reasons- which if so then fine, i can imagine escorting heads of state back and forth for quicky fags being a bit difficult to organise. But if not then the double standards are pretty appalling.

They just put a ton of pubs out of business with the smoking ban and now they just change the rules for the big wigs. I think the security excuse is a bit lame they must be able to create a safe outdoor area. Double standards, you've got to lead from the top, "do as i say not as i do" just dosen't rub.

I'm sure they will use security as an excuse, but still, I don't like this!

THIS IS NORMAL for "Politicians" to think they are above the rest of us?

That's what they call "Executive Privilege".

Tell me about it, the sanitised version they sell here hates our government, was anti lisbon (different reasons than me though) etc.

I hate when I agree with them.
Thank god for Christopher Tookey film reviews, I need someone to disagree with every time I open that rag.

Perhaps if they had to endure not smoking they would begin to feel some of the pressure and anxiety felt by the common man during these times of recession.

I imagine trying to thrash out economic policies that are meant to save our financial system could be just a little bit stressful...

This is merely proof thet SHS does not harm people-which is something we have known all along. If it's good enough for so called 'world leaders' then it is certainly good enought for people of the world!
This corrupt government have now stated the obvious-"we don't care what you think, you will do as we say!"
After April 2nd, there is no point any pubs ofr clubs not having a smoking room and building up their pathetic customer bases again. The hospitality sector has had its heart ripped out by these two faced nanny politicians, now is the time for the people to show they want freedom2choose(.info) so that they can rebuild their businesses.
I would think that Punch Taverns who's share prices have divebombed from £13.80 (pre ban) to just 00.35p (yesterday) will now seriously consider asking all their tenants if they want to be smoking or non smoking? Let's guess.....a resounding 95% will say yes!

What makes these 'world leaders' more important than s mere mortals.
I am risking my 'security' if I have to stand out in a cold dark street to smoke.
I could be mugged.raped, assaulted. Why am I and millions of others not worthy of 'safely'

They should know how it feels, what a disgrace.
They do not care they send the elderly out of their homes if it is freezing, the pubs and venues they have managed to help bankrupt. The punishment they have unjustly forced on those who try to fight this unwanted ban.
This hypocrisy stinks, far worse than any smoke, know wonder people feel forced into voting for parties outside the norm.
