HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — Some Phish fans are leaving Hampton a little lighter than when they arrived for the band's weekend reunion.Police said Monday they confiscated about $1.2 million in illegal drugs and more than $68,000 in cash from concertgoers. Authorities also arrested 194 Phish fans during the three-night celebration of the band's return to the stage after a nearly five-year absence.
Most of the arrests were for drug possession, use and distribution, police said.
Tourism officials had estimated 75,000 fans would be coming to the coastal Virginia city. Nearly 200 law enforcement officers worked the weekend event, with the Vermont-based band picking up the tab.
Update: Thanks to LeonJackson for pointing out the fine print at the bottom of the original article. Boy do I feel stupid. I don't know that much about Phish so my ignorance is showing.
I updated the the post to point to the original AP article and change the title. Sorry.

Cops Reel In Phish Fans - March 11, 2009
Mug shot sampler of jam band devotees nabbed in Virginia drug sweep
MARCH 11--The return of Phish to the concert stage has been a welcome development for both fans of the jam band and police. During a series of concerts last weekend in Hampton, Virginia, authorities arrested nearly 200 Phish fans, most for possession or distribution of narcotics (cops reported seizing $68,000 and illegal drugs with a purported street value of--exactly!--$1,213,882.80). On the following pages you'll find a mug shot sampler of the Phish fans nabbed during the March 6-8 "multi-jurisdictional operation" overseen by the Hampton Police Division. (25 pages)

My mistake. This story was a fake I guess in the sense that the fan blame Phish?
But the actual bust was real and that is what I find so disturbing.

What's the difference between the Grateful Dead and Jimi Hendrix?
One person is a real talent, really trying, and the others just flop along. The decals show flop-along.The difference between silly and non-silly.
Silly is a short statement. Brevity.
You guys smoke a joint and actually 'listen' to that crap.
Might as well stick your head into Dumb-Soup.I mean, stand back - look at what you've been doing!
Get the picture? - Dumb is dumb. - 11 months ago

$1.2 million in confiscated illegal drugs..................now that explains why sometimes I login to current.com and hit news, and half the posts are about legalising drugs.
They'll have Alzheimers in old age......not a problem for them, because they will be unaware that they have it.

While I find the extent to which this article blames Phish for the police presence at the concert questionable, I think that if the busts continue at their concerts the band needs to seriously rethink the idea of touring.
It may not be their problem that many of their fans are marijuana smokers and are being busted but when you consider the band's history it certainly is something they have encouraged.
I kind of always wanted to check them out live and when I heard they were touring I thought about going. I can guarantee that I will not ever go see them live now. Why? I am 41 and I have my families security to think about. - 11 months ago
