Spaniards strip naked to protest against Canada's seal hunt
The members of animal rights group Equanimal smeared themselves in red liquid to signify a "massacre" of seals by Canada, where the annual seal hunt is due to resume in April. Some wore red underwear, others were totally nude.
"We want to sensitise people to the fact that animals are capable of feeling and suffering like us, and to protest against the massacre of hundreds of thousands of seals which is about to begin in Canada," said spokeswoman Silvia Toval.
Canada is home to the world's largest annual commercial seal hunt.
The country, which defends the 350-year-old hunt, has authorised the culling of 275,000 seals on the Atlantic coast this year, nearly a third of the number killed annually worldwide.
Over 40 percent of the seals killed last year were still alive when they were skinned, according to Toval.
Equanimal said it wanted to pressure the European Parliament, which is due to decide next month whether to impose a complete ban on seal products in the 27-member bloc.
"This is the first time that I get naked for a cause like this," one of the participants in the protest, Jose Antonio Polo, told public television TVE.
"It is very sad because I put myself in the skin of these animals who are treated like objects and they are not objects, they are individuals who have the right to be born and live in freedom," he added.
The seals are hunted mainly for their pelts, but also for meat and fat, which is used in beauty products.
According to the European Commission, Canada, Greenland, and Namibia account for about 60 percent of the 900,000 seals hunted each year, with Canada being the biggest source.
Seals are also hunted in Iceland, Norway, Russia, and the United States as well as in EU member states Britain, Finland and Sweden...
Put your clothes on! You're scaring the seals...

although i agree the seal hunt is not the best thing to happen... and likely should be stopped...
there are a hell of allot worse problems you would be focused on... lets see water anyone? lets try climate change? our continual genocides of each other? our over breeding? how about aids? Pharmaceutical companies? Monsanto? weapons manufacturing companies? war profiteering? war crimes? How about the thief of wealth from people? How about the fact that you do not own your own body when you are told what you can and can not put into it? Lets look at Italy’s wonderful history of leather? making real renewable (solar and wind) energy available to everyone?
nope... Lets totally ignore the melting icecaps… and lets protest a bunch of seals... that are being killed in Canada.... when your in Spain.... golf clap for epic failure and miss placed priorities.
At least a few people in Istanbul are protesting something worth while… like keeping water public propriety rather then allowing a bunch of money grubbing corporations make your PAY for your water and hence forth own your life because with out water… you are just waiting to expire.

Animal rights are important and bad treatment of animals is worth protesting. But most Canadians also hate the seal hunt and are working to try to stop it. Spanish people, who care about animals, should take a long hard look at the cruel and grotesque "sport" uh torture of bulls/bullfighting. Do something to stop it and shut up about Canada. No Canadian kills seals as a form of entertainment. Torturing bulls is not only entertainment but an art form in Spain.
-
hahahahaha, All protestors should go nude. Why not? you'll probably end up in jail anyway.
-
As a Canadian I find it interesting that people can become so sensationalized over a seal hunt, yet they could care less about human rights. That is what is on most Canadians minds and maybe it should be on yours.
Oh no, some animals were slaughtered and they looked cute. Meanwhile places such as Spain could really care less about human rights, most police interviews there start with a beating.

The Canadian seal hunt is the largest slaughter of marine mammals on Earth.
More than one million have been killed for their fur in the last four years.
Men run out on the ice and take a big bat with a hook on it. The newborn seal is
Struck in the head until if not dead--dazed
This usually takes place in the presence of the mother. They are usually skinned on the spot;
Leaving big bloody splotches all over the ice.The seal hunt season will begin in 11 days and nine hours. Shame on the Canadians.
With all the monumental problems facing us--this one can be solved with the stroke of a pen; not a Louisville slugger.

I agree, its disgusting...stop buying seal fur products...everyone. My point is...the Spaniards have a culture that celebrates animal cruelty. Its ironic they should be pointing a finger at Canadians
-
this is good for getting peoples' attention....
it really disgusts me how disrespectful the Canadians are to seals.
Human rights issues are more important?
I guess it would be okay if we did this to peoples' children for their skin?
People put themselves in situations... animals are helpless. Human rights violations are not right, but they are not more important. We are not the innocent children of the earth any longer, that went away when we decided that vanity was more important than animals' lives.-

...don't they still horrifically kill bulls for "sport"? or is that only in mexico now...i can't remember.
although...isn't it rather normal for europeans to be naked? maybe this isn't quite so shocking in their culture
-
yes they kill bulls for sport in spain.
the left give s liberalism a bad name. what a STUPID way of getting attention. it makes the cause appear to be supported by fruitcakes.
as an attention getting device, sure, stunts like this work. as for the right kind of attention, I DON'T THINK SO. imagine if they spent that kind of time and effort into some effective method of protest or prevention, like writing their legislatures, or supporting a candidate who would actually DO something. this kind of "conciousness" raising is really just lazy delegation - with nudity.
what a world!!

In response to all of you who seem to think that caring about animals is stupid, and that somehow it means you don't care about humans, shame on you. Perhaps YOU are incapable of considering more than one 'issue', but most of the world is not.
"A human being is a part of the whole, called by us the 'Universe', a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separate from the rest - a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security."
- Albert Einstein"Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances of survival for life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet."
- Albert Einstein"The question is not, Can they reason? nor, Can they talk? but, Can they suffer?"
- Jeremy Bentham -
Do these particular Spanish protesters endorse killing bulls while condemning killing baby seals? eh?
-
I love how people make such an issue about Newfoundland's seal hunt. I guess the genocide in Darfur is not an issue?

If redirecting that SOME Spaniards support the bull fights is the only thing people can do in discussion of the seal hunt, it shows that there is absolutely no defense for such a horrid practice.
How easy people are putting all of Spain into one small category. Most of the country opposes the bull fights. These activist oppose the bull fights AND the seal hunts. They likely protest BOTH issues. Equanimal has jumped into bull fighting rings to protest the barbaric practice (see link).
Why all the prejudice against Spain here?

Ya know, sometimes - this whole "democracy is the only good" notion is bad.
It's good that you think you have a say - but it really just ties you from any action at all.
If Canada were skinning human babies so that people could make money, would you still sit there and have fun taking your clothes off at a rally?
Or would you do something about it?
Talk is cheap.
