What Happened to Current News?

// added March 16, 2009 // 162 comments //
I remember the day when you could visit the hompage and it would seem like their was something new everyday. Now when I visit Current.com it seems that nothing ever changes. Voting used to be integral. Now I have not voted for weeks.

I miss that robotic voice that would read the news and tells me what "bobsmith0907" or any other users thought on a post. New content on Current seems to come weekly now, instead of daily.

I reminisce about these days and wish they were back. Post what you wish was back on Current.com. Here is what I would like:

1. Current News video w/ the top 5 most popular news stories and user comment every two hours

2. Voting on the top 6 Current Stories like "Obama ***** at AIG" and "Paris 2.0"" WITHOUT having to click on the actual story. (Like you do on the rising news section; add the arrows to the stories section)

3. Widescreen view of Current.com

4. Better topic than "News". News is so vague. Make it Politics or Gossip; just more specific.

5. Remove the Beta from the Current logo. Current is like Google. It is always updating, there is no point in the beta tag.

6. Current.com francais version

7. Better Facebook app

8. HD videos tv and online. That news broadcast screen behind InfoMania in the beginging is hideous in its current quality

9. Organized User Accounts. P.S. I subscribed to that "E Zine" and never received anything

10. Current Account working with Facebook Connect and Open!

These are what I wish Current.com and TV had. It started with things Current used to have, but removed, then continues with new things; but all are needed.

P.S. I miss the Current Viewpoints. I liked hearing what people had on those topics. Polls added to post would be good to, but not as good as the Viewpoints.

    • I thought current.com was wonderful..........but then I noticed the change too. I'm fairly new...........I found out about current only last Dec. when the GAZA genocide was happening and all I wanted to do was get the TRUTH out there.

Thanks to current many of us got to the truth and the world of the Palestinians will hopefully change by us keeping it in the news.

My GRIPE: I hate that as a community the power is with the EDITORS PICKS. I feel bullied by EDITORS PICKS. It might be sour grapes because none of my posts on the Middle East were ever editors picks..................even when one had over a thousand hits. I was pleased that more than 1,000 viewers read my post.......................and am suspicious that it was never anywhere near the front page ( never made the Top 20 posts)............................really did over 500 people vote that post down? It shows 1,079 hits on it and the link to it is above. Why, can any of you who have been on here a LONG TIME tell me why is this. Yes.......many did not vote...I agree. Yes, most did not like Iran so they voted it dowm without reading it.

My next question is I have some that were read by 500 plus viewers and they did not make it to the front page. Sure I have many that did not get read by more than 40 people.........................but I see ones on the front page that were viewed 8 and 9 times and they get voted on to the FRont Page. That's an Editors Pick surely without saying so.

Yes.....I have had FRONT PAGE stories (never had a #1) and I was glad......but believe me it is disheartening to think that the system, like world government, is not fair.

Please tell me it is FAIR,,.....and prove it to me........I want to believe but my eyes tell me otherwise.

We need TRANSPARENCY. Can current display the voting in the way they display the views? One of my posts never showed how many views it had. Starange? The post is still there and the views don't show up.

Furthermore, I've noticed the quality of stories has been terrible as well.

    • Stories with more "new" comments get some sort of bonus (because people are talking about it)

Stories that are newer get a bonus -- these points should go away as the story ages

Stories that are on the top of their category get a bonus
for being on top of that category --(with it being weighted by category activity -- also this should age)
      ----
Also The number of votes should be shown (number of individual story votes and number of bonus votes seperatly)
      -------------------

Since Friday at 4PM (Hmm, time for employEE) to go home) they had the same old tired stories in News in featured. We all know why ; ) Monday morning when somebody gets in that will all change. I know that other sites have moderators or volunteers, why not make somebody that's trusted and has 8gazzillion kudos to volunteer on weekends? This way it can stay fresh. Counting the darn votes don't work, counting comments doesn't work, and what's considered "fresh" ?? The freggin Olympic Torch not being run ..for 3 days?? In the meantime people are dying in floods in the US .. we have masacre at nursing homes and all kinds of news .. whats up!?

    • My quote from a post earlier today:
".....I would like to know the criteria for choosing Movies to be so high up in your priority giving it the elite top of the page spot ??
According to the story count (the num next to the tag name - I am just guessing this is a story count or some other quantifiable guage of the "tag popularity")

      movies - 3359+
      Tech - 11046+
      Music - 19274+
      Green - 22235+
      gaming - 1465 +

      (+ (here) represents similar tags)

so if you go by sheer popular demand by site patrons (which I thought what current tv was about) should'nt 'green' take the spot of 'movies'?!?

unless more revenue is generated by the movies category taking this elite spot on the page.... if this is so... It's fine with me... honestly dosent change the love I have for this site but a little clarity whould be appreciated... only because that's what I thought current tv was all about.... but then again, this might not be any of my business." - end quote

after typing this today I came to check out this post to see what you guys were saying... this story has 1496 views (as of right now) and more comments than any other story right but did not make it as the "featured story"... in fact, despite it's popularity, it is steadly moving down. the #1 story right now has 181 views (I like the story... just pointing out the numbers)

McDonalds?!!? REALLY?!? wonder how Al Gore 9the reason I came here to begin with ) feels about that?

I thought current had a "suirvival of the fittest story" mentality but now there is proof ( from my prespective ) that it isint. I am disappointed current! It's been a good ride but now we have to part ways :-(

      Really going to miss JanforGore...

    • I have cut back on my posting and visiting of this site since the changes. It just doesn't feel like home anymore to me. It is a struggle to find things I am interested in now. I rely mostly on what people send me and occasionally I venture into the topics that are on the home page.

If things are going to get better, I hope that happens soon.

Does anybody know a quick way to download all your comments that you posted?

I would like to have a copy of everything I wrote on this site, in case I decide to leave.

    • * current89 - I do believe in limiting the tyranny of the majority -- I suggest a compromise --- put the old style main page back where every thing gets rated regardless of topic and add some weighting for being the top of a particular topic --- let it work sort of like this

keep a total of the number of stories and comments added to a topic for some time period -- that number indicates how popular the topic is. Then using the top ranked story as a base assign bonus points that are recalculated on some timely basis so that the higher a story is and the higher the topic is add together to move stories up
      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stories with more "new" comments get some sort of bonus (because people are talking about it)

I think your suggestions are all very good. But I have no power on current. I'm not a staff member, as many seem to think. Just a member that's been around for a good amount of time. However, I'll respond to you nonetheless, since your one of the few people who has tried to meet halfway(which is much appreciated).

"put the old style main page back where every thing gets rated regardless of topic and add some weighting for being the top of a particular topic"

Thats the one area in which I disagree with you completely. I think the topics should be rotated, to a certain degree. Certain stories really have no validity, like world trade tower conspiracy articles, or new world order articles. I think they're way to biased, and in fact, irrational and just plain stupid.

"Stories with more "new" comments get some sort of bonus (because people are talking about it)"

I agree with that and your general premises. But as I said before, I have no power on current.com other than that of a regular member. Thanks for being so reasonable in your post.

    • hey everyone,

just to add further explanation -- i realize that there is still some concern/confusion around the channels, the new layout, etc.

nobody denies that the new layout is a drastic change, but take a look at the Movies channel and The Rotten Tomatoes Show to get a better idea of where we are heading with these channels. i realize this requires some adjusting to, as it is a very drastic change, but all of these changes tie to a plan for both online and TV that will roll out over the course of 2009.

please keep the feedback coming (either on this thread, or via email feedback@current.com) as it is extremely valuable to the team.

      thanks,
      mario

    • I don't have much hope that they will pay attention to this thread [[ Edit - I stand corrected -- Thanks Mario]]

Have you noticed there is no where on the site that you can send feedback you must email it to Feedback@current.com rather than use some insite mechanism.

Current had such promise that the viewers and clippers could drive the topics. Enlivening discussions about what is in the news. Turning on the show and seeing the robot headlines and comments made me want to go to the site and see what was going on.

Being on the site made me want to watch the pod's on the TV - they feed each other now they mostly don't - its like a tv show and a forum website that don't really mix together much - the thing that made it great and unique is mostly all but gone :( -- Its a good concept maybe someone else will try it again sometime even if only for a 1hr or 1/2 segment on some channel

    • I guess the only negative comment I can give is the elimination of the "Earth and Science" section. And some of the news articles that are featured are a little bit to shallow for my tastes. But at least we don't have a massive amount of pot articles being featured.

As to the accusations of censorship , comparisons to Mao, and the like. It's ridiculous. I also find the comments that suggest staff members shouldn't vote or submit stories unthoughtful. The staff members help run Current, they help design current . So shouldn't they be allowed to participate as well? It's like saying a government employee shouldn't be able to vote.

Overall,I like Current.com's new version because it isn't a direct democracy, it's more like a representative-republic. checks and balances. Folks who wouldn't normally get their stories featured have the opportunity to do so now (like new users). There are some things I dislike about it, but they're fairly minor.

Instead we now have a series of carefully selected issues that sit for days at the top of the page with no comments, no interest and no justification for there placement to be found anywhere." Sometimes I feel like this as well. Things do seem slower, stories less likely to move around. I hope they come up with a solution for this.

One problem I think that ties into that is too many "entertainment" tabs- now I'm the first one to jump up and say we should open our mind about what "news" is and what that means on Current. I like funny articles and debating comic books and movies as much as the next nerd- but having only two topic pages for serious news (being news and green, MAYBE tech is 3) while the rest are entertainment/humanities seems silly. Not that serious stories don't end up on art and style or music, but there should be a better balance of political, scientific news vs entertainment pieces.

I like Gaming. I like Movies. But I liked Earth and Science better, ya dig?

      Damn straight.

I love [good] art and music and movies and books and gaming - but they are what they are, in the grand scheme of things. Potent and ingenious commentary on culture/ society at their best, mind-numbing "entertainment" at their worst (sadly, the latter is much more common). A single "Media" tab would be sufficient.

Science and Environment and the State of Society and Law and even god-forsaken Politics are INFINITELY more important than Transformers fucking 3.

    • I was optimistic about the new format for awhile but it honestly did not take that long to realize how horrible it was.

The old format will also be superior because it operates under a truly democratic, survival of the fittest type mentality. It wasn’t perfect, there were times when the current.com staffers channeled Chairman Mao and made certain stories disappear, but all in all the power to make or break a story sat for the most part in the hands of the people.

It should come as no surprise that when we had that power we used it. Discussion flourished because not only was there a need to debate the validity of the topic at hand there was also a need to justify the importance of that story in relation to everything else on the website. So basically even if, under the old format, you found only one story relevant to your interests you were still compelled to comment on the subject, regardless of whether or not you even agreed with the assertions made by the poster, the story and those commenting on the thread.

That in my opinion made current.com so great. It advanced human discourse in a completely unique way. It even rewarded well thought out opposing opinions or level headed introspection by featuring those comments. How rad was that. For a time in certain situations current.com and CurrentNews had a self imposed fairness doctrine that pitted the cream of the crop in terms of public opinion against one another.

Now the new format is in no way similar to the old format, with or without Current News. The interesting, hotly debated, or left field oriented stories are no longer a click away. Instead we now have a series of carefully selected issues that sit for days at the top of the page with no comments, no interest and no justification for there placement to be found anywhere.

In all of a day we went from a democratic, people oriented news site, that was guided by a light handed fair minded staff to THIS IS CURRENT NEWS, ALL HAIL OUR COLLECTIVE IDEOLOGY, LISTEN TO OUR CRAPPY MUSIC. Seriously in the year or so I’ve been on current.com I can remember like one real music oriented story featured by CurrentNews. Now we have a whole clusterfuck devoted solely to what current.com staffers think is hip.

Why are your favorite jam bands important to me? Why should I care to consider the similarities between Coldplay and the Beatles? You seriously thinks this crap is relevant? It certainly is not to the people that flock to this site because if it was we’d submit it and discuss it. Again that was the beauty of current.com, relevance was proven by debate, by vote, by discussion.

    • hey everyone, thanks for all of the feedback. I don't want to come off as sounding repetitive or dismissive here, so please don't take it this way.

a while back, we announced that Current:News was taking a leave of absence while we worked on the next version of the Current:News concept. since then, we've launched a new version of the homepage, and understandably the response to the change has been strong.

we are listening to your feedback and taking it to heart, but please understand that we are in mid-stride when it comes to these changes. here are some updates:

+ Current:News will return in two ways in the not-so-distant future.

+ the first version will be the return of automated updates on Current TV soon. stories will be picked on a regular basis, and those stories will appear on TV. these new bumps will be slightly different in format, but that is because...

+ these new bumps will be joined by an all new nightly news show produced by the same team that brought you the original version of Current:News.

+ channels are similar to the old homepage, just narrowed in focus. the top two stories on each channel appear on the current.com homepage. our online producer for news features stories regardless of popularity, and only the top featured story shows through to the homepage.

+ homepage hero emails will return, this time with versions for both the current.com homepage and the individual channel homepages.

+ freshness in the channels are a known issue that we are working on. our algo needs some tweaking for channels, and we are actively looking into it. this can also be helped along by votes and submissions. the more you vote and submit on a channel, the more content will be refreshed on those channels.

+ you can still see a list of all new stories submitted to Current (click on the link below "rising news" on the homepage). if you find something in the new feed that belongs in a channel, tag it to that channel.

we still have a lot of work left to do, and we appreciate your patience throughout these changes.

as always, join us on Thursdays for Town Hall chats to discuss some of this stuff. watch for it in the "Current Stories" and head over here for more details: http://current.com/townhall

I hope this helps clear some stuff up.

      thanks,
      mario

Glad to hear that Current News is coming back but that doesn't change the fact that these "Channels" are crap.

Current had a vibrant community that submitted/voted/commented enough to keep the top 20 fresh and new, but having a different top 20 for each of the 8 "Channels" leads to stale stories and everyone moving on to Reddit or Digg.

It's your call. Help us, help you.

All the censoring of my comments, the allowing of bigots and idiots...the replacing of great comments with moronic comments has really destroyed this site. The funny thing is it is in the BAY? WTF? but with change comes degradation I suppose.

I told the douchebag that kept censoring my comments that this site could be a great voice of the masses of people that see mainstream media for what it is. I suppose the desire for not pissing people off or making money on a grand scale has ruined another great opportunity.

Current sucks ass...thats all i can say, and it imploded from the top down.....ohh well, im sure they will take this down, but i wont be around to see if they did anyways....so they do it or they dont....

People's votes don't count because the current workers seem to be choosing what goes on top (no offense, current workers).

It's no longer interactive like it was. So, I rarely come on. I come on to check new news once in a while but it seems there s 5% what they used to have on here.

When it was about giving producers feedback to improve their ORIGINAL videos. I remember when Conor was on Google Current. Dont get me wrong, I love Infomania and VVFS.. I even miss Eric ledgin. My point? Current has changed...A LOT. Most people have no idea how drastic of a change since it's beginning days. I'm along for the ride because for the most part, it's improved. I really do miss the old format and miss a lot of the old users [CosmoPlavix!!!!]. But change is not always a bad thing...It takes getting used to...Its been a slow changing process. I mean, the toolbar hasnt updated in like 2 months! I try to have faith that theyre working on it...but we just arent seeing it in action yet. who knows.

Yes, that was really great. To come here and see original videos and vote on them thinking you were actually contributing to the work of another and getting their stories out. It really has regressed here, and I say that with love in my heart because I too have been here from the beginning and want to see it work.

But to add, I agree with those about Vanguard. It is the best part of this site and tv station. If they ever do away with that, forget about it.

What they had was perfect, then they had to mess with it and this watered down copy of what used to be doesnt even come close to the original.

For an example. 1.) I was logged in. Made sure of it!! The site opened and I went here muted because you actually directed Me. It gave Me the response box. I entered my response and clicked submit. I got the log in box again with that little blurb, "sometimes you gotta". What a crock of shit!! Then it sent me to a window screen saying my computor may be offline. Again, Bullshit!! I was able to submit before it threw me off the site altogether. But looking here, my comment never made it. Coincidence? Happens alot. But I just resubmit again. They don't stop Me.

    • I still post but not as much, I quit watching the TV version, I would like to see the current in this article back. Current tried to fix what was not broken and ruined the original product in the outcome. The new Current needs to be the old Current and the old Current needs to be the new Current.

    • "Schlimbesserung...."

A paradox. It means, "Making Worse" by "improvement."

In more than 40 years in business the same rush to overcook a winning formula happened, time and again.

When it wasn't the frantic brainstorm of a new exec trying to make waves, it was a dimwitted focus group that urged management to abandon what worked in the hope that something far more ill-conceived (but popular in the Decider's sector) would catch on and lift the company to new heights..

      The usual result?

Public loss of confidence in management and slow disengagement by clientele.

If recent meltdowns across the economic spectrum have shown us anything, it is management hubris. People who don't listen carefully usually forge ahead with neither adequate preparation nor consultation with end users. Such leaders are a problem. Refusal to be receptive renders the exec twice as deaf when it comes to being told - Look, you're wrong. You need to take ten steps back.

No one has told me - "You know, Current is working better than ever!"

Instead Comments look pretty much like what appears above.

      And that's not good NEWS.

    • Well, I gave it a chance and I have to agree. When you still see postings on the second pages of these topics that were posted here over a month ago, I don't think people are either posting here or they are being propped up on purpose to keep other submissions down. And I am appalled that Current has MCDONALD'S advertising on this site. Talk about selling out. And actually, it is always the same few people who get their "safe" submissions chosen forTV here, or who get on the "current stories" list. How can you be get up there if you don't even have any responses to the entry? It makes me wonder if there are certain people being told to post without staff designations to keep others off... You know, like those who post about Monsanto and other controversial issues that should be on TV? I wish we could get some real clarification, and also some explanation as to why Earth and Science has also not been placed back, and why "Green" is still considered appropriate for matters of science. This may be what their consultants and sponsors want to get their "demographic", but it isn't good practice to me when you have people here who were loyal to the station based on their original goals, which I still am.

Sometimes change takes a while to get used to, but I still haven't found these changes to be beneficial (except the ability to change one's vote; I've been loving that!). I've been waiting for that "Oh, that's why they did it" moment, but it's not happening.

    • This is pretty much why I haven't been here/ enjoying the site nearly as much in the last few months. It feels like it's gotten watered/ bogged down. It's not really alive any more. Or perhaps its metabolism has just slowed down to a crawl.

I used to come here to learn, hear new ideas and viewpoints, get the low-down on the latest *innovations* in society/ science/ art/ etc.

They should keep running with the innovation! Keep everything connected and electrified! Blending in with other news sites *shouldn't* be an option for this site/ channel.

      :(

      PS
Why the fuck're "Movies" the second most important brand/ category (blech) of news we should be interested in...?
"Art and Style" is bottom right, but "Movies" is second only to generic "News?" Supposedly more relevant than the latest scientific innovations, or the current state of our environment?
      Bullshit!
We don't all live in god damned Southern California.

      PPS
OH WAIT there is no "Science" category. Just "Tech," a.k.a. news about whore-sucking Twitter, or the latest laptop. What a lame substitute.

      PPPS
      Oh, and "Gaming?" Seriously?
Don't give a wet fart. I can go to gametrailers.com and get more/ better information.

Categorizing things is bad enough in principle, but are these SERIOUSLY the only categories they could come up with?
Current is supposed to be about SHIT THAT MATTERS.
      Not the latest FAD.

Sometimes I can't recommend comments or I can't vote up or down while I am in the post. I have to go back to where it is in the list and vote. So consider this a recommendation. And I agree with what kaecvtionr said about there never being any new stories. It makes me mad when I look at the Top 20 of one of the tabs and all the stories are 2 weeks+ old. THAT'S NOT "CURRENT"!

It also seems to me that there is this favored "core" group that get the most exposure on a continual basis, and that is how it appears to me.

    • I believe the people @ Current got some ace up their sleeve. Or at least I hope sooo.... Current has created a great jewel of innovative modern media. Now the ideology has been established, the evolution of interactive web/TV design must be created. What that is, I'm not sure. But something mind-blowing, revolutionary, it must come from Current--their platform is much more socially advanced then traditional media. It just needs to blossom into something much greater.
One thing that well surely expedite progress is our voices being heard in forums like this.

I think that maybe we should have a list of categories, and people can vote them up or down like they do posts. The top ten categories get on the home page.

Apparently someone on the current staff found it and said "Oh hey look, it's not ANOTHER story about legalizing marijauna" and decided to bump it to the top, because I got an email informing me that it was selected for the #1 spot. Alas, the story didn't get on TV because Current News was canceled. Grrr.

Thanks for the memory. My post was #2. Those were the days. I didn't care if my posts made it to the top. It was just fun, posting and participating in what felt like a community.

I am still commenting, but not really contributing new posts. I'm unemployed right now, so I have the time to be on line. But if I were working, current.com would no longer be the first place I go when I get on the web.

In my opinion, a few individuals came to current and complained about the cannabis posts making it to the front page every day. Jack Herer is posting at current and no one has more information about cannabis than Jack. The cannabis information is information, which has not been mainstream, so many of the facts are new to ordinary Americans. It's no wonder they were making it to the top. Cannabis hemp facts are both historical and new. Cannabis hemp posts made it to the top because people voted them up. I think current caved to the few, at the expense of the many.

Once again, thanks for the memory.

personally, i see the new front page as blasé boondoggle; clutter. so perhaps this is why there is a lag in new user input. poor aesthetics is a turn off, naturally.
