The personal computer may soon be not-so-private, with the U.S. and some European nations working on laws allowing them access to search the content held on a person's hard drive.

President Obama's administration is keeping unusually tight-lipped on the details, which is raising concerns among computer users and liberty activists.

    • If they inforce this law I'm taking my laptop and throwing it as hard as I can at obama, i mean i like the guy but this is taking the piss tbh, being stopped and having computer searched? I guess im glad i have an external hard drive for all the files i don't want them to find...

But seriously this is just fucking retarded, there are few places we can have privacy and they're taking it away from us bit by bit, why not just stick a fucking tracker in my while they're at it and get it over and fucking done with!

    • so basically at nations like china...

again...i'm def for liberty over safety etc...it just doesn't seem like a very rational fear. I really don't see this being an issue in the US.

the first case brought to court would go to the supreme court and amendment violations would get it thrown out and the law erased.

...'thats why we have a supreme court after all :)

    • Here's another source on the same story... It's also been covered b y Wired and the EFF. The proposed multi-national treaty is called the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (Acta).

According to Computer Weekly: "It is believed the agreement is aimed at large-scale forgers and unauthorised distributors of copyright material, especially across national borders, and was originally expected to come into play at the end of 2008, but talks have being ongoing. "

    • um...I'm also a little sketched out by the source. Russian Times? um...do we know how valid this media source is? I trust the young turks so maybe I'll wait to worry until I hear it from them.

    • er...difficult.

I am firmly against illegal sharing. companies have made it so easy to purchase only the songs you want and 99 cents a song is reasonable and STILL people download and share infomation illegally. so in a sense i agree with the gov's idea.

but obviously, inside of america, this is a violation of our rights, whichever one it is about warrants and no unecessary search and seizures.

so let's get some protest emails rolling. Obama is much more likely to listen than Bush ever was. stop bitching and take action! unfortunately I'm in korea so there's very little I can do

    • Not sure how much truth there is to this, but still kind of scary nonetheless. Good thing I own a PC and they can't stop me on the street and go through my files. I'm totally safe in my little bubble.. right?
