Take away all the nutball labels for this and it's just common sense. They even teach it to Boy Scouts. "Be Prepared". Like Heinlein said. "Keep your wind-up, never pass up a chance to eat, sleep, or pee because you never know when you'll get another chance, and be prepared to drop your suitcase and run". Not and exact quote, but kind of a summary.

"Spirko, 36, considers himself an average guy with a normal life.
"But for the past few years, Spirko has been stockpiling food, water, gas, guns and ammunition. He also has a load of red wine, Starbucks coffee and deodorant stashed away."I refer to myself as a modern survivalist, which means I don't do without," Spirko explained. "I have a nice TV; I have nice furniture. We are not living in the sticks, but I take all of these things very seriously."
This guy is a total Idiot! How long do they think a national collapse would last, (should that happen)...let me see a week, 20 days, a month.?
BTW electric companies will run electricity as if nothing had happened, so IDIOTS like this guy can watch TV from outerspace stations!Modern survivalists killing for a cup of Starbucks coffee! Ayyayay

Actually I have no weapons , just 10 pounds of superb organic powdered chocolate , grains , hemp , stuff for my garden . I think I am more focused on making sure i have a happy life , and can share it with my friends . Still , whatever happens , I would hate to run out of chocolate !

"You turn on the news and only hear about job losses and the prospect that things are going to get worse than better," he said. "You see signals that the world is full of nasty things you need to avoid. You've engaged in this general sense of avoidance. You are trying to focus on safety concerns."
in other words, your'e a paranoid isolationist with a stockpile of food and weapons who's scared of the rest of the world.
hope that you have a happy life like that. the world is a pretty wicked awesome place all things considered.

you'd need a pretty big garden to feed an average family should the US collapse. not to mention fertilizer, tools, time and ways to store them. in that way, modern suburbia planting it's own food is kinda laughable.
what's NOT laughable is the idea of returning to small scale farming. that would be wonderful.
oh, and I'm not saying having a month long survival plan ready and resources prepared is a bad idea. that's a really GOOD idea regardless of how nutso apocalyptic you are (or aren't). planning for and hoping the US falls apart IS kinda stupid though.

Thanks , that makes me feel not alone . It would be good to network too ... seeing as those who don't handle stress well (and are in denial) seem to freak out and kill people for no good reason .

I'm planting a garden, too. Not because I expect everything to fail, but prices at the store are too expensive for organic...and I'm not even a liberal!
