Arrested: US Marine At Airport With Bomb-Making Materials
Corporal Justin Reed, 22, of Jacksonville, N.C., was booked on US Airways Flight 877 to Charlotte, N.C., said TSA spokeswoman Ann Davis. She said Reed had arrived on a flight from Las Vegas this morning.
TSA screeners in Terminal B called State Police at 7:10 a.m. after a screen discovered the following items in his checked baggage: a locked handgun box containing a semi-automatic handgun, a fully loaded gun magazine, several boxes of 9 mm and 7.62 mm ammunition, three model rocket engines containing an explosive mixture, military pull-type fuses, switches, electronics kit boxes with various components, and a hand grenade fuse assembly with detonator.
Reed was charged with possession of an infernal machine and possession of a concealed weapon in a secure area of an airport. He was booked at the State Police barracks at Logan and held in lieu of $50,000 bail. He will be arraigned at East Boston Municipal Court on Tuesday.
Davis said it is legal to have a firearm in checked baggage but that it must be declared to security officials. The passenger in this case had not declared the weapon, she said. Davis said all checked baggage on domestic flights is required to be screened by TSA on originating flights.
Reed's bags had to be screened again at Logan because baggage handlers inadvertently routed them to baggage claim instead of onto his connecting flight to Charlotte. Typically bags are not rescreened during a layover, she said.
Davis said TSA was "actively investigating" why the gun and explosive materials were not detected during the screening in Las Vegas.

I wonder if he had served in Iraq or afghanistan recently. I remember all kinds of guys that sent home pieces of m-16s and other weapons from Vietnam.

There was a report much derided in some corners of the country that right wing extremist groups and militia movements were actively seeking returning veterans for recruitment and that exploiting disenfranchised veterans for thier military experience represented serious potential for an increase in domestic terroism as was seen in the militia movement during the 1990's and the leftist anti war movement epitomized by groups such as the weather underground in the vietnam era.
Perhaps we should both remember that public defense is nonpartisan and that the largest terrorist attack before 9/11 occuring on our soil was perpetrated by an american under simmilar circumstances. Let us hope that this young marine wasn't among a second wave of such activities. Either way I think that its time we accepted a rational view on this topic and came to an understanding that extremism on any front ins't healthy for this nation and high grade explosives and assault weapons don't belong in the hands of criminals or extemist groups.

I have used Logan many times & happened to fly & out & back just before 9/11. I definately noticed basic security issues & a very casual effort by the screeners. However, this was also the first time (that I noticed) my carry on luggage was swabbed to look for traces of explosives, I was told after inquiring. It's nice to see their system works when it's supposed to - even if it's by accident because your coworkers messed up. At least the screeners did theirs. So what's with Vegas missing this guy?

Tim McVeigh again?

I will not offer any speculation on this until we hear what his explanation is. That being said, It does demonstrate how flaccid our airport security in reality is.
-
Possession of an infernal machine? Is that legal parlance?
-
Hmmm...Shouldn't they consider him a terrorist? It sure sounds like it.

wtf was he thinking.......
-
I wonder what he was up to, it's certainly concerning given all the right-wing protests going on right now.

It seems quite odd that someone who is extensively trained in the use and safe handling of firearms, ammunition, and explosives would make such a bush-league mistake. Even a Marine would know that transporting such items on a civilian aircraft is a major no-no without filing at least a ton of paperwork beforehand...especially in this post-9/11 world.
Odd. Very odd indeed.

50,000 bail?!! why is he not up his own as in cuba like the other terrorists...oh yeah he's white

model rocket motors make you a terrorist? what's next matches?
they had no business snooping in luggage. 911 was an inside job. It's actually tied into the war on drugs, in that they will use it to enact the police state and the removal of freedom. -
It seems rather like the guy meant to get caught. Maybe a diversion to test security.

bottom line
he knew better

I hope the next "terrorist" attack is on MONSANTO or the CFR.
It would be nice to see every single member of the CFR in flames screaming in agony.
Just the thought makes me smile = )

He should have checked these things for sure but there is nothing screaming terrorist. I have traveled with guns and ammunition in my checked luggage many times since 9-11. It's not a ton of paperwork either. Just check them in. The TSA people make sure they are secure and send them on their way. As for the rocket engines and hand grenade detonator they are pretty vague on details (engine size and such) but nothing sounds capable of endangering any commercial aircraft. And, if he was a "terrorist" he could definitely find better "tools" in N.C. after he arrived and would not risk transporting these insignificant items. It seems to me like a weak attempt by The Boston Globe to create "news" out of some 22 year old kids laps in judgment and an overanxious public eating it up.

Shawn, it is probably the gun, several boxes of ammo, and the hand grenade fuse assembly...that sounds like a bit much to me...

My cousin in the Marine Corps has brought home 9mm from Iraq while on tour and was able to get it passed security and everything, its not hard to do. Also he may be a Marine Explosive Ordnate Device (EOD) operator that could explain why he has those things. Also it states that he has the mixture for it, but it was never mixed together and that he had his hand gun which may off been Marine issued, secured in his bag. 7.62x39 are used by Ak-47 weapon choice of insurgents in the middle east. Any branch that is prior to deployment or coming back have been or are being trained to be familarized to use an Ak-47 as a last resort when out of 5.56mm ammuntion for their M4 or M16A2 service rifle, also known as a AR-15 to civilian buyers. Buts it's up to the courts to decided as well as being court marshelled in Judge Advocet General (JAG) court room, with the possibility of dishonorable discharge on his DD-214.

If he turns out to be a bad guy naturally he'll be from the right wing. The govt. has already promised us that.
