Just a medical diagnosis away from financial ruin

The New York Times has a story about the Walker family in Texas who are struggling to get by without employer-sponsored health insurance after Mrs. Walker was made redundant. Their son has cancer and they are now unable to find affordable insurance coverage because of this pre-existing condition.

I read somewhere recently that the inability to pay medical bills is the number one cause of bankruptcy and financial ruin for families in the US.

Universal healthcare is a hot topic across the pond - what do you think? Does the NHS work? And should the US adopt a model similar to the NHS? Do you know someone who has had a bad experience with an insurance company?

    • As an American living in the UK, I can say that the NHS works. And it makes me crazy when people complain about it. Sure, it's not always the most streamlined process, and things can get frustrating. But it's no different with private health care AND it's not cheap. For years, I was one of the millions of Americans without health care that you hear about on adverts and in news articles. But I'm one of the lucky ones who never got hurt or sick. I can't imagine watching your life savings disappear because you had to choose to save your life.
