Baby Kangaroos Butchered in Australia

Joeys rescued after the recent bushfires are seen at the home of caregiver Annie Williams in Gisborne, Australia.

Whilst the state of Victoria does not allow commercial hunting, Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia and South Australia do.

Sanctioned by the Australian government, hunters are instructed to kill any joeys by decapitation, shooting or clubbing.

The controversial practice has been brought to the forefront due to the opening up of vast parts of NSW to commercial shooters.

As I myself have been to Australia before I know the feelings that Australians have towards the kangaroo. For those of you that haven't been there and don't know the story allow me to explain the situation and tell you the story.

When the first Europeans came to Australia they used the East side of the continent as a sugar cane plantation pretty much. So, as with all white dominions, the Europeans felt the need to perfect nature and damn up rivers so they could use the water for agricultural purposes. By doing this the kangaroos benefitted, as apposed to all the other uniquely Australian animals that dropped dangerously lower in population. Seeing as kangaroos are NOT able to be domesticated and therefore controlled in that sense, the government gave the rights to hunt them out of season which would help lower the population. BUT, the government failed to realize that hardly any large amount of kangaroos live near humans, so the only ones they would be shooting are the ones who will end up on the side of the road or not reproducing anyways. This idea obviously didnt work too well but it has kept the kangaroo population from becoming a major problem. However, most Australians have very harsh feelings towards kangaroos in part because any kangaroo not used to humans will gut you. So, they feel the need to kill the kangaroos like rats, which in some cases kangaroos have been known to be very much like the rodents we know here in America.

I hope that this helped you understand what is going on with the kangaroos and Aussies.
