I got a friend request on Myspace from Eclipse the other day and have been thinking about writing this story ever since in a kind of peripheral way. I mean it isn't original music but yet it isn't Pink Floyd either. But the band is unsigned and so I figured why not?I saw Beatlemania in its 3rd or 4th incarnation as an off Broadway show long after its heyday and that was my first exposure to what have come to be known as tribute bands. I always hated doing covers but it was pretty much required for bands at the time.
But tribute bands aren't like doing covers. I decided that they are more like performance art. "Becoming" the band that you are portraying is not easy so it must be a kind of a mix of acting and music. In addition, tribute bands give fans the chance to have the experience of seeing their favorite performers live in a way they probably won't ever get again with the real band.
From that perspective i can respect tribute bands and these guys are pretty good at what they do.
