New Mexico's Otero Mesa wilderness area has been protected from the Bureau of Land Management's plan to lease public land for oil and gas drilling. This is a major victory for the State of New Mexico, and for the 1.2 million acre Otero Mesa region of undisturbed Chihuahuan Desert grassland. In Denver on Tuesday, April 28, a three-judge panel of the 10th U.S. Court of Appeals determined that the BLM did not provide protections for Otero Mesa, and the potential impact drilling would have on the endangered Northern Aplomado falcon and underground water sources.
