The group of Czech tourists died as they scaled the 11,500ft Schalfkogel peak near Soelden in the Austrian province of Tirol in stormy weather.

The avalanche happened on Saturday afternoon but the conditions meant rescue helicopters could not approach the scene of the accident until the following morning.

The six frozen bodies were recovered, all of them believed to be Czech tourists who had been on a mountaineering tour when they were surprised by a sudden outbreak of bad weather.

Ronald Ribis, head of the rescue service, said that helicopters were dispatched as soon as eyewitnesses reported the avalanche at 4.15pm on Saturday, but they were unable to land because of a snowstorm.
