I visited Vegas in the mid 70's to visit my grand parents. Way smaller back then I dont even recognize the place. Back then it was the strip and about two blocks either way and that was it.

Graft, scams, sweetheart legislation, political kickbacks, economic protectionism of grossly reckless and mismanaged institutions. We took the foundational concrete of a nation and diluted it. These institutions would have survived had their vital signs been properly tested - meaning regulated, and audited. They were not. It is foolhardy to argue they were.
The big business tsunami to cash in on public ignorance spread and became a vast herd mentality of hubris and winks for insider lemmings (with golden parachutes) at the top of the food chain.
Socially worthless time-dependent economic policies? No-see-ums. Intangible to outsiders, till the knock on the door to say, 'Those brightest guys who ever lived? They were simpleton crooks who screwed and ruined you. They were in a hurry. Your existence was not a priority...'
'We're here now, and sorry to throw you out just because no one thought to make plans to bail you out. It looks like the system drilled holes in the floor that collapsed under you. The system is too big to fail, but not you. Or me.'
The dot-com scam was 'journalized,' meaning sanitized, with a sprinkling of media quips like, "youthful exuberance." This time it will be a contest to argue who was more crooked, in a system that invites crooks and wannabe players to the same decision table - without discriminating who shouldn't be there.
What you get is a collective of "Stakeholders" unwittingly under the thumbs of economic arsonists and termites. "So you wanna build a Church?"
By satisfying too few real priorities, then publicly parading Spin and Cost\Benefit Analysis (a fiction, too often) as Proof Of Concept, the wheels started to move and roll. Right over a cliff.
Choose whatever metaphor you think fits, quick buck roulette and short-term thinking has returned the Nevada desert to being a desert, uninhabitable by an excess capacity of humans, unwelcome to humans, hostile to human life.
You expect that from a desert. But a political and economic system that is less proactive than a desert? That's not smart enough even to be dumb.
