Consumerism is down in response to the economy, and that is bad for business - but seems to be great for Mother Earth. Trash output is down and now the California Redwoods have been given another rest - people just aren't buying wood to build houses right now. This video is an interesting peek into the rise and decline of a hopefully dying industry - Logging.
I live in California and I hike in the Redwoods almost everyday. There is something so beautiful and majestic about these trees, make it a point to see these forests at some point if you haven't! :)

    • If I were Caesar - I'd engage a forestry plan for the world. There could be always growing sections. Industry would comport for a planned harvest regime.
Old growth would be forever managed.

Fundamentally, the earth needs rain-forests and we need rain-forests.

Such a plan must integrate world finance and trade. So forestry must be part of a viable world economic system.

So it should make sure everyone's back gets scratched, economic growth and opportunity are accounted and that the earth doesn't get raped in the process, near or long term.

There's redwood trees around where I am as well. Northern Calif. But I'm on a foggy bay.

    • There should be no more cutting down of "old growth" redwoods in the country or elsewhere, ever.

There are vast areas that were stripped clear by foresting decades and more than a hundred years ago that have not been replanted.

    • It's quite interesting that a logging company has achieved a sustainable process for getting lumber; so much so, that environmentalists are concerned for it's well being during this time of markedly decreased building.
