FINES OR JAIL FOR HOSTILE BLOGGERS ?

A new proposal in Congress is threatening fines and jail time for what it calls "cyberbullying" – communications that include e-mails and text messages that "cause substantial emotional distress."

The vague generalities are included in H.R. 1966 by California Democrat Linda Sanchez and about a dozen co-sponsors.

The plan is labeled the Megan Meier Cyberbullying Prevention Act, after the 13-year-old Meier, whose suicide last year reportedly was prompted by a woman who utilized the MySpace social networking site to send the teen critical messages.

"Sanchez's bill goes way beyond cyberbullying and comes close to making it a federal offense to log onto the Internet or use the telephone," Kravets wrote. "The methods of communication where hostile speech is banned include e-mail, instant messaging, blogs, websites, telephones and text messages."

The bill, which has been referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary, states, "Whoever transmits in interstate or foreign commerce any communication, with the intent to coerce, intimidate, harass, or cause substantial emotional distress to a person, using electronic means to support severe, repeated, and hostile behavior, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both."

    • Free clothes, room and board, three squares, daily exercise, social networking, and a lot of reading time. I forgot. Are we talking about jail or the new world order?

    • I suppose now is the time to set up the pedophile monthly mag with free calendar. Hey if it is protected by the government at the total expense of honest and law-abiding citizens and specially children, it should produce a huge following within the democrats in the House and Senate.

Anyone caught saying anything bad about a pedophile could be thrown in jail. Isn't this a direct attempt to destroy free speech. And what is "causing emotional stress? I'm sure if a pedophile is headed for jail time he would be very emotionally upset. Would that mean the Judge and prosecutors will go to jail too?

One ray of hope. The Obama birth certificate is still not settled. He has spend almost a million on attorneys across the nation to keep from exposing his birth certificate information. Also, he was supposed to have received foreign exchange money when he went to college. Money for foreign students, non American, exchange student, as in not a born American citizen, meaning everything he has done should be and is unconstitutional and he should leave the office immediately. There is a case now in front of the Supreme Court.

We may have reprieve from this leftist President. He can always go work for GM.

    • This has very little chance of passing, as I have read in other sources. But then again, in these days, anything can change on a whim.

    • Someone who only wants to send emails but does not want to receive them, could file a lawsuit against every single person and company that sends them anything at anytime.
What a garbage law...why can't they think of something constructive and useful? They are getting paid to make up this nonsense.
      Hey, I know what!
How about a law against lawmakers who make up ridiculous laws?

Surely this "hate crimes" bill won't pass, and if it does will be deemed unconstitutional. It's clearly a violation of the first and fourteenth amendments.

This is some scary crap. By the time Obama's done we won't recognize the place. I guess it's a good thing if you're one of the "special" people.

(Oops! I better keep my remarks to myself lest someone call the thought police and have me arrested on federal charges.)
