Mayday Mayday: Smash EDO - Shut ITT

re-size
Monday 4 May 2009: A street party and protest was called in the seaside resort of Brighton by anti-militarist campaign group Smash EDO.

Brighton is home to the EDO/ITT factory that builds bomb release mechanisms for the US, UK and Israeli military. The campaign last year saw several large protests calling to shut the factory and end weapons manufacturing in the city.

Brighton: Shut ITT

More recently, in January this year several campaigners were arrested after breaking in and decommissioning the factory, causing £300,000 worth of damage to computers and machinery.

This year's protest, the largest demonstration yet, saw some 1,500 protestors take to the streets to target all businesses that profit, invest or assist in the weapons factory day-to-day running. But when a MacDonald's fast food outlet was targeted, the riot police moved in and the demonstration deteriorated into an afternoon of clashes with the authorities.

MacDonald's are listed as owning 61.500 shares in the ITT Corporation.

yep. starts as creative carnival - dragons & dedication then simply more fucken riot porn.
you either gonna shut factories or fight police - make up your mind!
And yes, of course police are employed by private firms to be private security at public expense - is this the same issue as stopping bombs killing children?
    Call it like it is.

Another good piece of film, and one which seems to clearly show the way that the police reaction to such events can make things much worse.

I had a much quieter day in London with the Strangers into Citizens demonstration - perhaps about 50 times as many people, only a handful of police and no trouble at all.

But of course it was the Brighton event that made all the news bulletins and papers, while a large and peaceful demonstration got no mention at all - other than my piece on Current.com and elsewhere.
