"Among the most appalling news stories coming out of Africa in recent years are those detailing the forcible recruitment of boys and girls into armed groups in Uganda, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. For these innocents, some as young as 12, life is brutal and, in some cases, all too brief.Out of interviews with former child soldiers in Uganda and the Congo, Norwegian composer Rolf Wallin and Belgian director Josse de Paauw have fashioned a gripping multimedia music theater piece, "Strange News." Its North American premiere by the Chicago Chamber Musicians will take place Friday night at the Museum of Contemporary Art.
Following the premiere of the original orchestral version by the Oslo Philharmonic in 2007, Wallin prepared a chamber reduction for 13 musicians, live electronics and narration (spoken by a young Ugandan actor, Arthur Kisenyi) in which a former recruit speaks of his harrowing experiences and subsequent rehabilitation into society.
The creators of "Strange News" make no moral judgments, reach no conclusions. Wallin forswears any political or social agenda. "I don't have any ambition to change the world," he says. "Of course, if I can change it just a little, that would be wonderful."
Chicago Chamber Musicians will perform "Strange News" and George Crumb's "Black Angels" at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E. Chicago Ave. Pre-concert talk at 6:30 p.m. $25 general, $20 CCM subscribers and MCA members, $10 students; 312-397-4010, mcachicago.org."
