School Shows Students Dangers of Texting While Driving Using Mario Kart
The simulation is simple. Students grasp the motion sensitive wheel in one hand, and a cell phone in the other. Then, just like in a real live driving situation, they fire off a blue shell before bounding over spongy mushroom jumps while a mustachioed plumber hurls bananas and high-pitched Italian-esque insults in their general direction.
See? Totally serious.
Now, silly as it sounds, this program apparently did educate the students about the dangers of driving in the Mushroom Kingdom while texting. "I ran into a lot of things and it was very stressful," said 13-year-old "it's-a me!" Alli O'Brian.
Good on her, and good on Eagle County, seriously, for educating these kids early on.

Excellent for schools to try to curb texting while driving early on.
Sucks that a bunch of apathetic / negative students will say that the comparison doesn't hold true because "there's no turtle shells in real life driving"

...yea but i could never drive very well in mario cart before or after i started driving for real.
though i do remember hitting black ice one time. i'm pretty sure that's as close as you can come to getting hit by a turtle shell and still have your car function. (it was pretty badass actually. full 520 spin and the car was mostly intact except for the mailbox i flattened.)

Could they have chosen a more realistic game? Say, Grand Turismo.

Our small town (about 25,000) has lost two sixteen-year-olds in accidents three months apart due to texting. The thought of the pain the parents of those kids are going through is almost unendurable. They were both smart, beautiful young people who did what ALL kids do sometimes by being a little careless. Utterly tragic. The only silver lining of which I can think at the moment is that in both cases, the kids left too early from stop signs in side streets, putting themselves in the path of oncoming traffic on busy throroughfares -- but neither of the drivers that hit them were killed. Miraculous, really, since both were in 60 mph zones...

realistically they should be driving with one knee while texting.

It's good to see Mario Kart being used in this way - I learned to drive before Mario Kart Wii came out, so when I encountered bananas on the road, I had no idea I was supposed to avoid them.
Since playing though, I now know that whenever waiting at traffic lights to hammer the accelerator when it's on amber, in order to get a speed boost.
