London Tamil Protest Policing Questioned

re-size
Monday 11 May 2009: Following the previous weekend of constant bombing by the Sri Lankan military of the Mullaivaikal "safe zone", the London Tamil protestors took to blocking the streets around Parlaiment for a fourth time, in a last attempt to highlight the plight of the Tamil people and be heard by the UK and world media.

But this time, at 2pm, TSG and City police massed on Westminster Bridge and the order was given to clear the road. What resulted, as this video shows, is a crushing panic that led to scores of arrests and injuries.

This film also documents some of the assaults and threats of arrest members of the press faced while trying to document the situation.

    More excellent coverage.

"Parasite" rather links in with the attitude of Commander Bob Broadhurst at 'Photography Matters' yesterday, when he was questioning the validity of press cards.

But doubtless that appalling performance will get some publicity shortly, here or elsewhere.

excellent film - these poor people are desperate and no-one is listening. what can they do to be noticed? they are peaceful people by nature. the use of violence against them is shocking. and the police attitude to journalists is terrifying - these are scenes i'd expect to see from a country we label as pariah.
