The daily briefings were called the “Worldwide Intelligence Update,” one of several intelligence reports compiled overnight and presented in a folder for Mr. Rumsfeld and other officials as they came to work.
In the selection of the cover sheets that GQ placed on its Web site, photographs of soldiers praying or in action on the sands of Iraq were overlaid with quotations like this one from Isaiah: “Their arrows are sharp, all their bows are strung; their horses’ hoofs seem like flint, their chariot wheels are like a whirlwind.”
Another, showing a tank at sunset, had this quotation from Ephesians: “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”
The accompanying article, written by Robert Draper, the author of a book about George W. Bush that was published in the last year of his presidency, suggested that Mr. Rumsfeld often delivered the briefings “by hand, to the White House.” But several former officials said Sunday that they doubted that Mr. Bush regularly saw the Pentagon briefing, which was considered both less complete and less sensitive than the president’s daily brief, the compilation of overnight and long-term intelligence assessments prepared for the president, and delivered every morning.

The usage of these quotes signals a blatant violation of the first amendment.

Great article current89. I know the past administration is gone, but reading about stuff like this still gives me the chills.
The slideshow of these cover sheets in the link by neocongo is a definite must to see.

That is so manchurian candidate . The original one , with Frank in it . Only this time , Franks character was missing and there was massive death and torture . I feel a sense of responsibility , because , even though I have been very active in the political process , I have not spoken out against zealotry as much as I could have . I am wondering if less tolerance of religions that use fear and guilt to bully people into a childlike faith may be necessary to maintain a democratic republic . We were not meant to be a nation of followers .

I believe some of the soldiers had their own idea for war "Quotes."
-
A quote from the 23rd president of the United States, Benjamin Harrison. "God has given no commision for the United States to police the world." and another from George Washington "The government of the united states is not in any way founded on the Christian religion." That is the diference between great men and tyrants.
-
You may be right Ocanada , Still I hope those who voted the tyrants in strive to correct the error . We all should .
-
I think these quotes amplify the fact that Religion is simply a means of justifying war and manipulating the masses.

maybe so, randallr01, but there are those that have religion to guide their lives and find purpose. not so much me, but others.
it is rather disheartening that religion is abused as such.

THE NEW HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE. I'm taking bets on when we start burning...unless the fire has already been lit...

‘Strategery’ – Strategy with a spin. Spin the facts, to the point the truth is no longer evident, then attack, attack, attack. It’s an “Assault on Reason”. It’s ‘strategery’!
The Bush administration, with the help of ‘strategery’ has spun religion to the point, Christianity now has new meaning. Ones faith should not be called into question, in the support of a war based on fixed facts, fake documents and torture.
A war of choice on a sovereign nation, which had not killed one American and was not openly threatening us, should not be spun into the will of God. God did not really authorize them to mislead us to war. That was a personal choice. Giving God credit for their actions, goes against the teachings of Christianity. They spin the Bible, thereby spinning God. They are making Christians dizzy. Accepting torture as policy is not Christianity, it’s tyranny. It’s ‘strategery’!

The whole thing is obnoxious.
How did such a group of clowns and buffoons gain control of the most powerful nation in the world?

Well, shit man, it's the crusade against evil-doers!! Y'all should just have enough FAITH to stay the course. We will find the WMD's. We can win the war on terror. Then, we're going to go after jealousy. Yep, the War on Jealousy is next. Then, after that, we're going to rid the world of bad hair cuts. The War on Bad Hair Cuts, has a nice ring to it. Or the War on Shitty Music. Or the War on Overpriced Car Repairs. Oh Wait!! I have it. The War on Ambiguous International War Policy!!! That's the one. Who's coming with me!!!!!!( the pitter patter of the little feet of Lemmings)

Soldiers have prayed in every war they have been in. Hell, even ball players have their little huddle and say their prayers before a game.
Soldiers praying that all live through the day is one thing, though.
When religious conotations like these come from the very people that are supposed to be directing a war, it becomes no less than the jihad extremists use against those they do not like.
Rumsfeld is religious zealot....actually I think many in the Bush admin were, weren't they? -
This is the reason when you should never take things out of context. Really, by doing so the Pentagon officials look foolish. As for having a chapel in Iraq and Afghanistain, it should be allowed. The same rights should be granted for any active memeber of the military of a different religious group.

the people over there believe we are occupying the area as part of a Christian crusade, and I'm beginning to think they've been right all along

I wonder if these guys just like quoting old literature, or if they actually went to Sunday School. It would be interesting to see if they ever quoted Jesus in one of the reports, or maybe he wasn't a significant enough character in the Bible... too meek I guess for their taste.

I love random rants with no supporting evidence. What indicates that Rumsfeld is a zealot? I see no overt actions from him or anyone else during the Bush presidency that indicates such a behavior. Simply acknowledging your Christian beliefs does not make you a zealot. No more then saying you don't believe makes you an ardent Satanist.
