Good Doc, But lets not forget the reason China got all our American manufacturing " our no good anti-American Traitors" sold the American people out!
We never wanted to outsource our Nations wealth.
Bush and his cronys( congress) aswell as other powerfull partys did this to America and I hope the American people may repay them for thier Treason. - 5 months ago

This is a great story. i love the part about the factories, everyone needs to watch this. with the situation in the US i have focused a lot of my attention on my art and it has allowed me to really experiment with my work, so there is some good out of everything. it would be nice to see more creative survival ideas out of the US but i think most of us aren't desperate enough yet.

Any more of a killing than any other gold dealer would make? By going to the owner/seller she was providing a convenience, no doubt she take more of a cut than the store front dealers. I'd ask her for cash rather than a check, but the party thing is a step above mailing one's gold to parts unknown. That I never understood. :)

Maybe this is perfect for all those "winers" out there that actually beleive we are in this situation,( in the US), because Obama was elected president and that he is responsable for our economy. This of course is so obsurb anyway,(since it was this way before he was even nominated to run)!!!

Ugh, no.
Al Jazeera English and Journeyman Pictures are both FAR better than The Daily Show. The Daily Show is absolute drivel. One notch above the rest of American news media, but that's not saying much.
Vanguard, Al Jazeera English, and Journeyman Pictures are each three or four notches above any other journalism outlets (that I'm aware of).

Nothing I have EVER seen from Al Jazeera has shown me that they have backbone. BBC is far superior to Al Jazeera, if you want to go with overseas journalism. I haven't heard of Journeyman pictures prior to your comment, but I will check them out. And I guess what I am referring to with the Daily Show having backbone are American news outlets. Still though, how can you argue that the fact checking and preparation done by Jon Stewart prior to interviews, and his willingness to attack guests for their hypocrisy, is "absolute drivel"?

1. If you want proof of Al Jazeera English's "backbone", just watch this two-part introduction to its American audience:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urd5Rf8QIOY
Also, the general consensus among those who have watched both the BBC and Al Jazeera English is that the latter is far better. I've yet to meet anyone else who shares your opinion.
2. Do check out Journeyman Pictures. Here is their YouTube channel:
http://www.youtube.com/user/journeymanpictures
3. There are essentially three elements to the Daily Show - the opening news summaries/reviews, correspondents' skits, and interviews. The news Jon covers are all-too-often completely irrelevant and unimportant. Is it really necessary to cover Mark Sanford or Obama's baseball pitch? The answer is "no". The correspondents' skits tend to focus more on being "funny" than actually saying anything worthwhile or significant, let alone genuinely shocking or revelatory. Not to mention, their comedic delivery, like Jon's, all-too-often comes across as forced. As for the interviews, most of them are rather shallow and never get into any actual meat. Obviously, there are stand-outs, like his interviews with Cramer and Huckabee. But more often than not, he'll pose pseudo-confrontational questions with the sole purpose of letting the interviewee communicate his or her point of view.
My point is, the stories covered in Journeyman Pictures and Vanguard are far more important and far more under-reported. And as for genuine "news" and current affairs analysis, nothing on television beats Al Jazeera English.
The Daily Show is just much too shallow. But hey, at least it's a hell of a lot better than The Colbert Report, which is just beyond awful.

Ok Eta. Until you show me an example of a prosperous contemporary nation state that reflects your views, they remain Utopian rhetoric.
The economic thinkers you dismiss as irrelevant will still be studied and modeled many decades from now.
Now your post did send me to research "Self Reflexivity" and it is a profound concept at first glance. I'll do more homework and return to the fray.

cheers to you as well. and i apologize if my reply sounded a bit harsh or mean-spirited. I don't think it's utopic... I do believe there's such a thing as contextual idealism...and marx spoke about being in touch and cognizant of "the process" of the production of goods... I think this is very important, it'll help our arcane version of capitalism transition to something less predatory and more sustainable. But this relies on our culture fixing its inner self and learning empathy, and not the complete reliance of economic academia. capitalism is the best economic system ever... it just needs some revision.

@mewcomm
the problem with your rhetoric is that it's literal, old-school short-sightedness. this documentary and corresponding vanguard pieces are about humanism, social responsibility and re-appropriation. not just academic, ended regurgitation of past economic philosophy. and dropping names like smith, friedman and putting parenthesis after marx is in itself cynical and ignorant.
we're just trying to turn the manufactured sentimentality that was passed down to us into something sincere. how can we as a culture and society consummate potentialities of marxism and construct a sustainable economic model if we don't first find human connection? how can we explore, signify and empower the process if there's no empathy and self-reflexivity?
you're suggesting a band-aid for an internal wound. - 7 months ago

I found the piece interesting. I found the comments naive and absurd. Have any of these people read Adam Smith, Karl Marx (Hero of the Left) David Ricardo, Thornstein Veblen, even Lord Keynes or Milton Friedman? Unlikely!
"Take to the Streets?" Have "Wal-Mart save the nation?" And "what kind of camera" did they use?
This is economic understanding?
I challenge the producers 3 years from now to revisit the Candy factory in Argentina and Recession Clothing Do a "Where are they now?" update. Further, re-interview the "Thank You Recession" respondents. Have they prospered with their new found behaviors?
Until then this piece remains in the "Feel good despite reality" category. The larger issues: the rapid decline and unlikely return of manufacturing jobs in the US and global competition are not even mentioned. And the really big problem: how the uneducated and low skilled have a very bleak future in a knowledge worker world.
Still I admire the producers for their piece. Despite it's shortcomings.

Mewcomm, you'er right Wal-Mart can't save the world, ALONE! What I'm saying is, "The richest of America are going to have too!" This country is our heritage and deserves to be saved! You can't just cut the poor this time etc! The rich are going to have to step up to the plate. !
Curruption and the debauchery of our country has come to a head! The blaming is over! Just fix it!
Yes Wal-Mart can - with help!
If Wal-Mart dose'nt eventually; there will be no customers, the poor, the working class etc, will be broken and if that happens, eventually 'the rich' will fall as well! do the math!
The powers that be better get wise and start paying to repair the damage!

I'm fairly certain that they were asking about what kind of camera was used because they're interested in working with film, not because it has anything to do with the recession. So I'm not really sure why you're complaining about that, unless you just enjoy appearing pretentious by scoffing at everything you possibly can.

Nothing in the interview indicated that recession clothing thought their enterprise to be anything more than stop gap effort. or that the expected to grow into a large production. Recession clothing, along with the Argentine workers who reopened the factories facoeries where they worked are are capitalists. In the event the candy factory, and other reopened shops fail, they may have failed by the actions of other capitalists who have a vested interest in having employee owned/operated businesses fail. The very little value added capitalist fear sucessful employee owned/operated enterprises, because it means less for those capitalistn that themselves produce nothing, but take bit out of the transcations of those who do produce. In the event the producers revist the topic I hope they take the time to do a through investigation into any failure here and abroad. In regards to the "thank you recession" responents, many where of a " better may smile nature because there's nothing I can do about it" nature. others seem to be stop gap, that may not become permenent habits. This was indicated in the video, where some Arentines, no longer used some oft he coping items that got them through the crisis How is prosper to be defined, is it permissable to define prosper in non-monetary wealth terms? Clearly those who learn to live well, without desiring the latest greatest right now prosper in the long run. The larger issues you mentioned really don't apply to many, if any of "hints and tips" mentioned here, I wouldn't expect them to be addressed.

About The Recession, by Richard R. Blackston
I have a question for the directors of Wal-Mart, which is, as we all know, a multi-billion dollar store chain. Why can’t they bail out our beautiful country? I know Wal-Mart can do this if they really wanted to, they certainly have the buying power and moreover, if Wal-Mart did bail America out, shoppers everywhere would revere the store chain! In doing so, everyone wins! So my question to Wal-Mart is, don’t you think it’s time you give back to this country, after all this country has given to you? Without a doubt, if I had a billion dollars, I would bail America out! So I ask you Wal-Mart, why don’t you or why can’t you do this for America?!
Furthermore, America has many resources which can be used to fix the deficit! I ask for the best country, pop, and rock stars to pull together and make CDs plus perform concerts to raise money to help bail our beautiful country out of its debts! It is time to stop pointing fingers at where the problem began, and start banning together while being creative toward fixing the problems, before it’s too late!
I call on the richest people in our country as well as the most famous. Lets take action to save our heritage before it's too late! The saying is true, there is some trash on the road, now someone should clean it up!
Sincerely,
Richard R. Blackston - 8 months ago

Not even Walmart has the resources to bail out the USA. Even if they did, and chose to do so, they surely would insist on the Walmart model. To cut costs to the bone, ALL manufacturing will move to China, and if not China out of the USA. Heck they just may ship us all out of the country. I guess that would be one version of health care reform.

This was a great documentary of the comparison of our CURRENT situation with Argentina's past. I studied abroad in Buenos Aires for a few months and completely understand what your message is trying to convey to people in Northern America. We should make way with what we have and weed out our needs verses our wants. Argentina has turned around for the better and the citizens truly live their lives to the fullest with what they have. We can definitely learn from their way of life. However, I do have a bone to pick that I feel the producers left out. What about "los cartoneros?"
