Most individuals hear CFO and think spreadsheets, revenue and lots of "math stuff". The role of CFO, though is very much analogous to that of a coxswain on a crew team. She/he steers, motivates, and sets the rhythm for the team, ensuring that everyone acts collectively. Another important and interesting characteristic they share is that both CFO's and coxswains must constantly seek opportunities which are directly related to outcome.
Having attended the Northeast Mid-Atlantic Rowing Championships last weekend and being a CFO (on a consulting basis) myself I found this article from McKinsey Quarterly to be rather insightful especially for those who believe I and other CFO's are best kept behind Excel all day.
