I'll be blogging from Hawaii next week covering various environmental topics. As always, I want to hear from you about what would be of interest.
I would deeply value and appreciate the following info from you...
1. Links to articles about Hawaii and specifically environmental issues unique to Hawaii
2. Are you interested in a segment dedicated to creating the most minimal carbon footprint as possible?
3. Do you use, or have, a favorite iphone carbon foot print calculator?
Thanks for your feedback! Have a great memorial day!
and... a link to the blog post if you want to see a few random vids on Hawaii...http://blogs.current.com/green/2009/05/23/how-eco-can-you-go-eco-blogging-from-h...

Here's one.
How about a piece on the total carbon footprint left by someone flying to Hawai'i to write an "eco-blog" on reducing carbon footprints?

Hey Mako2424,
I hear ya. I see the irony, that's why I wanted to make a point of documenting and discussing that very point. I don't foresee people stopping traveling anytime soon, though, so I do see value in discussing eco travel, being transparent about my carbon footprint, and exploring how various cultures are engaging with the sustainability movement. Do you? - 9 months ago

No, I don't see the value in simply discussing "eco-travel," which seems to me to be a bit of a misnomer unless you're talking about walking or biking, or being transparent about one's carbon footprint (what is gained?...besides a trip to Hawai'i, I suppose). Implementation and use of newer technologies that could or are being used, on the other hand, is something I would be interested in (i.e. the Next Gen Air Transportation System, the continuing evolution of fuel efficient vehicles in the U.S., the progress of algaculture efforts, etc.).
Perhaps, it's just me, but this whole thing (and, increasingly the entire site) feels a bit greenwashed.

In a semi-related side note, how is the return of "Earth and Science" to the front page coming along? You weren't just blowing the proverbial smoke were you?
And I quote:

"Hey folks,
Thanks for your feedback. We read it. We take it in. We make action plans. We are working with our developers to bring back "science," but it will take some time to build the feature. Thanks for telling us how much it means to you, and stay tuned" - 9 months ago

Hey Mako2424,
I am just now seeing this comment, doh! So here's how it shook out: Deliatheartists is curating our science page: http://current.com/topics/32969142_science/And science that applies to sustainability and the environment also shows up on the "green" page. Meanwhile, thank you for suggestions (truly) for topics. i did look into the progress of aquaculture, so look forward to sharing that with you as soon as I write it (later this week).

How Extreme Do You Go Green?
In today’s world, although “going green” is not only a trend but an environmental necessity, we all have the option to choose the lengths to which we are willing to go. Which begs the question – “How extreme do you GO GREEN?”
Please comment : ) Especially Ms. Leahl

Good article! Ok: to answer some of the great points in this piece: there was a lot of focus on garbage. This has been a pet peeve for years, and my family would call me a little nutty (and irritated when I didn't wrap their presents one year :)
1. Do you rewash disposable plastic cutlery to keep it out of the landfill AND save money? (yup)
2. Have you painstakingly folded up all of your paper and foil holiday/birthday decorations, despite their one-time-use status? (do my great demise, my roommates disgust, I am guilty of creating clutter)
3. What about saving your bathwater in order to irrigate the landscaping materials around your home?
(sometimes..not always)4. Have you been depositing all of your paper price tags and grocery receipts in a recyclable container — ditto for plastic wrap and used plastic gift cards?
(nope!!)5. Are you notorious for scrubbing out your Ziplock bags and hanging them to dry? (you betcha!)
Alright...I answered...you?

I would love to see a report updating the fight against GMOs in Hawaii. Hawaii has been one state on the forefront of keeping GMOs out of its state. From taro, to papaya, to coffee, big agribusiness has tried to contaminate Hawaii with its GMOs, but due to widespread consumer opposition so far it has not been successful. Hawaii should be a model for every other state regarding how to fight the invasive spread of GMOs into our environment and food supply.
Thanks Leah if you can do this, and have a great time. I was in Kauai about 18 years ago for a week with my husband. My best memories were canoeing up and down the Hanalei River and taking in all of the breathtaking beauty of the island... Then 9 months after the trip I had a baby. Good times. Mahalo ;-).

Thanks for the well wishes Jan! Nearly everyone I have spoken to has had a lot to say about the GMO issues. I look forward to reporting on that as I go. Looking forward to seeing some breath taking sites!
