It is amazing how peoples life long beliefs change when the issue hits home.

uh... he "supports" it because he has no choice after the state has passed judgment on the issue. it is up to every state to determine through their own legislative process whether to support it or not. does the VP's comment deem true support of the issue? not sure about that.

Wow! Dick Cheney has towed the Republican line for so long he forgot that while he was the vice president he could have been more influential about gay marriage. I think it's sad that he placed his party's politics over his family.

It's probably safe to say that he would be against gay marriage if his daughter wasn't a lesbian.

Apparently he loves his daughter. Why condemn for him for this? We all shoulder our own burdens in life. He has bravely taken on this burden, that is totally at odds with his political position. Kudo's to him and his courage and boo's to his detractor's. His critics should gain some maturity, raise and support a child, invest your total emotional energy into that child...then you will have earned the right to understand what it means to be a parent! Cheney has always been mysteriously silent on this issue. Even Bush supported the state-by-state legalization policy, until he needed to get re-elected. He didn't come out in support of the Defense of Marriage Act until he could use it to politically rally the Conservative bases and confuse the older, more socially conservative Democrats, especially in Florida and Ohio ;)

But this position is not new at all, though Cheney's willingness to speak about it is, due to his apparent discontent with being out of the White House.

It may have something to do with his daughter being gay, but even if that was the reason, then she is lucky, because there are thousands of gay individuals that have been abandoned by their families after finding out their truth.

When one reads the whole article through, it clearly states that this not a new position for Dick Cheney to take. Both his wife and he have said the same things before on several occasions. The whole Cheney family has been consistent in their stance on gay marriage. This is nothing new.

I consider Dick to be a federalist. His position is not surprising to us. However, I’m excited that he has respected the State of California’s sovereignty and is respecting the California State Supreme Court decision.
