Former VP Dick Cheney supports gay marriage

Dick Cheney rarely takes a position that places him at a more progressive tilt than President Obama. But on Monday, the former vice president did just that, saying that he supports gay marriage as long as it is deemed legal by state and not federal government.

Speaking at the National Press Club for the Gerald R. Ford Foundation journalism awards, Cheney was asked about recent rulings and legislative action in Iowa and elsewhere that allowed for gay couples to legally wed.

"I think that freedom means freedom for everyone," replied the former V.P. "As many of you know, one of my daughters is gay and...

Better late than never. I still loath the man, but welcome his "its about time" conversion.

His daughter is gay so...it makes perfect sense. Otherwise, who cares.

Only because he has a lesbian daughter. If he didn't I'm sure he would be lock-step.

You're probably right banditalamode, but this is a prime example of why the equal rights movement will win. As more and more people come out to their friends and neighbors, straight people will become personally invested in the equality movement. They will want the same rights for their sons, daughters, friends and neighbors. This is why we are winning.

I have this hunch that Dick Cheney is just going out of his way to confuse people for the fun of it.

I wonder if Dick Cheney supports the Defense Of Marriage Act (DOMA).

I consider Dick to be a federalist. His position is not surprising to us. However, I’m excited that he has respected the State of California’s sovereignty and is respecting the California State Supreme Court decision.

Intolerance, immaturity, and narrow mindedness have no place in a democracy

It’s sad that bigots cannot accept a democratic outcome.

The people of California have spoken.

Can someone call an ambulance? I've lost my jaw and can't seem to reattach it.

To be honest, I had some suspicions. Conservatives have this bad habit of abandoning their dogma and using their reasoning when it comes to actually having to deal with real life, tch, what a bunch of jerks! Everyone knows a real conservative stays true to their standards no matter how wrong they are!

On a similar vein, do you think Cheney would renounce his stance on torture if he had to suffer it through it for three weeks?

    I think he would.

@Davidandgoliath Dick Cheney is not noble. He is still a war criminal and deserves to go to prison for life. No amount of support for the LGBT community will change that.

I love the idea of Dick Cheney supporting gay marriage. I can just see him now, wearing little rainbow lapel pins, and dancing in the streets of San Francisco.

In other news, pig were spotted flying over New York. In an interview, they explained that it was merely a photo-op.

It seams like a Republican attempt to be more modern to the times. It seams like he will be chomped down buy every Republican homophobe out there.

But over all i think he said it to push the party in a so called "New direction" that they have bin looking 4 ever since the defeat in November. As well for his darter hew is openly gay.
