Officials try to piece together where Air France Flight 447 hit the water.Authorities at Buenos Aires' Ezeiza Airport delayed the May 27 flight before takeoff and conducted a 90-minute search of the threatened aircraft. Passengers were not evacuated during the search, which yielded no explosive material. After the inspection, authorities allowed the plane to take off for Paris.
Four days later, flight 447 from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to Paris disappeared with 228 people onboard. On Tuesday searchers found debris from the plane floating in the Atlantic Ocean 700 miles off the coast of Brazil. There was no known threat against that flight.
Watch "World News with Charles Gibson" Tonight at 6:30 p.m. ET for the full report.
Brazilian Air Force spokesman Jorge Amaral told reporters today that the debris is spread out in two main areas, about 35 miles apart, located some 400 miles from the Brazilian islands of Fernando de Noronha. Searchers have seen scattered pieces of debris, including what appears to be a seat, on the ocean.

I won't even attempt a call on this. Maybe terrorism; maybe not. Observations, I can make.
This aircraft wasn't old. Air France maintains their aircraft. Malfunction; enough to down the craft, is unlikely. Futher, with the standard redundant systems all international carriers have, it's hard to imagine weather conditions being responsible. But more than one automatic malfunction report was received. Signals were received within 180 seconds of each other. This is fast. Lost cabin pressure, which means the seal was breached, and electrical malfunction - which could be anything to this reader with no experience. Maybe unlikely, but not out of the realm of possibility. Shit happens.
At the same time the lead pilot was experienced. There's an emergency radio channel (our military calls it Guard) that's restricted to just that. If it was a malfunction and the craft was going down the pilot would be screaming. Brazil was listening. nothing. Assuming the radios were working.
Where does this leave us? Nowhere. Ocean floor terrain doesn't help. Storms in the area don't help. Ocean currents can be back-tracked, if they're known. But even if the crash area is narrowed down to a few square miles location of the main wreckage depends on the black boxes and their signal. Hard in mountains. Maybe too hard.
Searches are conducted by finding the suspect area and then running over it like cutting a lawn, dragging the microphones. Back and forth. How big an area? How many vessels involved equipted to do the search? 1 square mile is one thing. 100 square miles is another. Given what we know so far, identifying an area 10 miles on a side would be some exceptional work.
That a big chunk of the plane itself was found can mean a lot, or nothing. If the plane hit the surface at speed it breaks up. An explosive can also blow a chunk off. If they retrieve that piece it will shed some light - or at least reduce possibilites. If the pilot had control it could be in one piece - mainly. Remember our hero that ditched? Or it could be scattered all to hell & gone.
My condolenses to the family members that lost loved ones. I hope we get lucky.

My condolences to the Families involved. I hope we can find out more information concerning that phone call. That's not conspiracy theory, that's called Murder investigation. Maybe by some fluke, a clue will be discovered as to why this aircraft went down. Because of the report of this threat that was called in, they have to take this very serious as an act of possible terror. Nothing wrong with that. We owe that much to the victims and the families.

Could not get the link to load. Anyone know if the flight recorders have been recovered? should not really speculate until then .

Dick Cheney wasn't hunting anywhere near there, was he? just joking!
Aren't those French so cloaked about everything? Why didn't they admit this when the plane disappeared? Who made the threats? Were the threats verified?
Now they are saying the debris is not from flight 447! What? Another plane crash?
Wonder what all this is about????
Maybe drugs?
Money?-
