    • German company Opel did something similar. They wasted money on advertising in several newspapers to thank politics to give them money.
Unfortunately they did not thank the german population whose money they got!

    • GM, Ford, & Chrysler all made unreliable products. I am not anti-patriotic when I buy foreign cars and trucks, I am using my money with common sense. I want a reliable automobile.

Its sad that American's are losing their jobs, but they don't have to look far to see why. Unreliable cars, employees paid way TOO much to install radios and tires (Thanks UAW) and greedy management are all too blame.

Moreover, Toyota employs a large number of American citizens, as they have factories here in the US. So if you want to call me un-patriotic for buying a Toyota, tell that to the Americans working in the Toyota plant in San Antonio Texas!

    • I guess I don't think it is funny because I don't see GM as a huge corporation -- I see it as the guy next door to where I grew up who worked 30 years in a stamping plant, and the guy across the street who worked his whole career in an assembly plant, and his neighbor who spent her whole life working at the supermarket where they shopped and her husband who sold them insurance. They never asked for a bailout and they don't deserve to be the butt of anyone's joke.

Right on. And the guy who served as a Tail Gunner in WWII and came home and worked hard all his life and retired from GM. And his son who is a tool and die man at the Delta Plant and...

After reading both of yours and slarabee comments, i have the feeling that you two are talking about the unfortunate worker who happens to be employed by GM and seems to be the scapegoat of all these problems.( ex. high worker pay, which is complete bullshit) While watching that I did not make any connection between the workers and the failing company. This failing company has to do with bad public transportation policy and horrible upper management for example killing the electric car. These cars that are being produced don't stand a chance against companies like toyota that have relatively new plants and no legacy costs. With the high unemployment in states like MI the bailouts and stimulus should have been used to keep these plants open and updating them or letting them be under control of a different company that wants to be a part of a sustainable transportation system.

Yeah I hear ya. Problem is people have been bashing American made cars (and products) for so long now that it seems fashionable.

Best car I ever owned was a Pontiac. Motor kept running and is still running in another car.

We at some point better find some national pride in the things we build instead of the things we hate or we are in fact doomed as a nation.

It is all funny until it is your in-laws that are too old to work and no one knows if the will have insurance or retirement anymore.

Work all your life just to lose what little you have got.

I just cannot find anything funny about it.

I get so pissed when I hear all the bashing as I watch all my neighbors who have worked so hard losing it all I could just hang my head and cry in shame.

      Well I have a Ford, dammit! :)

Things will pick back up again; it's the way the cycle goes. American car companies do need to become leaders again, to embrace interesting science and technology and churn out efficient, and cost effective automobiles. With the government backing GM, I can only really hope that they can NOT fail any more than they have and for the industry and our economy, the only place to go is up.

    • Bottom line for me is this:

I try to stay pretty involved in matters on the website but I do not really watch much tv so I was a bit surprised by this.

I grew up in the Lansing MI area and have lived here all my life.

I have been a network engineer for 15 years and many of those years I have worked on contract in one capacity or another for GM either in house or for one of their vendors.

Is the Bankruptcy pretty damn funny is it?

I tell you one thing Michigan already has 13% unemployment and we are people too and we do not think it is very funny.

Last year was the first time I ever drew unemployment in my life and it sucks.

Glad all of us here suffering could give you a laugh.

    • I too worked for a company that just closed. It was one of the best restaurants in Southern Oregon. It was the best place I have ever cooked at! 26 mile round trip on mt bike when I couldn't catch a ride......very hilly terrain both ways. This was 10 months ago and I can't find a job even in fast food! I can relate to and feel for those who have lost jobs also! May we all get work and be back on our feet soon! Those that still have jobs cherish them even if you hate where you are.

Really everyone needs to be lucky when they have a paying job, and appreciate it. I keep hearing these people saying I might quit my job, cause I don't like it? They better think again, they aren't just passing them out everyday and night anymore??? I said you better think again. I said don't quit, until you find another one. My daughter did this, and quit her job, and the other one didn't pan out? Now she's unemployed for the past 7 months. LOW LOW INcome????? Don't quit any job's, keep them and thank god for it really!

True but the big three still employ a lot of Americans. I fear not for long though when it seems to be cool to trash and make fun of your neighbors losing their jobs. I am not saying you but look around our country. Who raised these assholes anyway?

    • My hometown doesn't think that GM's bankruptcy is very funny. In Lansing, MI, GM directly employed 1.6 percent of the workforce in 2005. That doesn't include all of the other workers who made their living in auto supply jobs and other support services.

It's all funny until it's my ox being gored.

      @Debrinconcita

You need to get a clue. Without people that build things there are NO jobs get it. If you had the first understanding of how industry effects the economy I would try to explain it to you but you are not even worth it.

I'm with you slarabee. This post is the only one I will bother wasting my time with on them, as they are not worth my time.
Obviously, those who don't NEED a car, aren't likely to buy one, but if they were to, I should hope it would be an American owned and built with pride by the UAW men and women that have busted their backs, literally, to keep this company going.
Even if I didn't have a stake in GM succeeding or not, I still wouldn't buy a vehicle built by a company based in a country that bombed my country and shot at my Grandfather and his brothers.
      Viva La General Motors!!!

"Aren't you going bankrupt after being handed more money than I can quite literally even fathom physically?"
