Republican Norm Coleman must pay Democrat Al Franken $94,783 to cover court costs for his appeal of Minnesota Senate election results.

A Ramsey County court administrator entered the judgment Wednesday. It results from the two-month trial that ended with Coleman 312 votes short of Franken.

    • Interesting, considering that it was Franken that initiated the court challenge in the first place. I think with that fact, an opponent should be well within his rights to appeal and not have to worry about covering the other guy's costs.

    • Good. This was obviously just to stall Franken from being seated. This kind of politics I despise with a passion. We all suffer for it. People like Coleman really make me sick. Remember at the beginning when Coleman unfairly criticized Franken for not waiving his right for a recount (saying that it would unlikely change things and that it would cost taxpayer money)? Yeah Coleman is an F-ing hypocrite! He didn't mind costing the taxpayers a senate seat for all this time.

He should be one of the many clowns that pop out of a tiny car at a circus. The 'leadership' of the republican party (who get most of the press time) are mostly a bunch of clowns with nothing to say other than bashing Obama - and for no good reason other than they have their eyes on the next election. There is no substance to what they are saying or doing, yet it resonates with the base (i.e. people with IQ under 80 or so -- people who accept ad hominems as actual arguments).

People like these politicians I am bashing (and also Democrats who do the same type of thing) have no place in our government yet us dummies keep voting for exactly that kind of person. Insincere lying stuffed shirts!

    • It will be interesting to see how willing the GOP is to fund Coleman's appeal to the US Supreme Court. I give it about 10 to 1 odds they do it.

    • I guess he didn't think about the consequences of dragging out the inevitable. I'm sure he'll get a lot of money from the GOP to thank him for preventing Franken's votes all of this time.

    • :P this was just the thing I needed to brightin up my day. It might not come close to the millions Coleman cost his state during the appeals process but at least its some what there.

    • this entire debacle just made a mockery of our already incredibly misunderstood state... neither candidate was fantastic in my opinion, though it is nice to have more liberal thinkers representing us..

Read! 94k not million. And for court costs for his little legal temper tantrum about losing the election. He thought just because he was the incumbent he couldn't possibly lose to a comedian.

And because his seat was the deciding vote in the Senate to make or break a Republican veto to bills he didn't want his party to hate him for eternity for fucking it up for them. Which they will even moreso now because he made himself the Republican party look foolish in dragging out the recounts.

But who am I kidding, the GOP didn't need him to make them look stupid. hahahah

    • Aha. I love it. Poor Norm... and he won't give up until he's exhausted every single option.

Hell... I get the feeling that Franken's term might be up before this is over with.

The time for Coleman to give it up came and went a long time ago. All he is doing now is dragging Minnesota through the mud and leaving us under-represented in Washington.

There you go making me look stuff up again :) I did not recognize his name but once I saw his face I have seen him a couple of times. Don't remember much of what he said so he must be fairly smart. It is the idiots that stand out the most in my memory. :)

He is one of the rare entertainers who still does live radio, hosting a weekly variety program called 'A Prairie Home Companion." I catch it on National Public Radio (which, IMHO, also has the best non-print news broadcast in the country) about one out of every three Sunday afternoons.

He has also written a number of books involving the fictitious Minnesota community of Lake Woebegone (his "hometown"), "where all the children are above average."

Additionally, he does a short daily segment for NPR called "The Writer's Almanac." It is just a little 5 minute broadcast that informs listeners as to which significant authors were born on that date, usually focusing for a minute or two on the accomplisments of one of them and closes with a poem of the day. The last are almost always thought-provoking -- and he has leveraged his preparations for the segment into yet another book of poetry which I believe is entitled "Pretty Good Poems."

He is an intellectual, although he has sufficient modesty and good taste not to say so himself. He has an incisive, sometimes WICKED sense of humor, a passable singing voice and a deep and abiding love for most things Minnesotan.

During a two or three month period several years ago, he revealed his deep loathing for Rush Limbaugh after the latter said something typically ignorant and insensitive. He has rarely mentioned the man since, however, and I suspect he feels that Rush is simply beneath his contempt. He probably also recognizes that Rush WANTS to be loathed -- especially by intellectual liberal Democrats. The more he is loathed by them, the more he can lay claim to being the champion of the Know-Nothing Party...

I apologize if much of the foregoing is information you already knew. I consider the man to be something of a national treasure, so I like to "spread the gospel" when I encounter someone who is unfamiliar with his work.

      @mark1957

This ruling came from Minnesota law and Minnesota courts.

However had a similar law been in place in FL. and Al would have been on the losing end in FL. I would have had no problem with Al paying. But that is not what happened.

Al Gore actually won his election.

He was also the only reason they stopped, had he not ordered them to it would have ended in his victory. Have you seen "Recount"?

But you don't think that way though, goes both ways.
