President Obama chose to defend the Defense of Marriage Act (aka DOMA) lawsuit at the great disappointment of the LGBT community. This is a HUGE slap in the face. Join the Impact is launching a twitter campaign to call Obama out @barackobama #promise-

jubal, but he doesnt have to defend unconstitutional laws like DOMA, lets face it, he isnt going to do anything anytime soon.
It is his duty to stand up for equality.
I am losing faith in this President as I am losing faith in this Country.

I was just talking to a GLBT attorney friend of mine who explained to me that Obama does intend to work towards the repeal of DOMA, however, the White house must defend the laws that are already on the books, if they didn't they would be derelict in their duty to defend the laws of the United States. So until the law can be repealed, their Justice Department must defend DOMA.
I have been reassured that Obama wants an end to DOMA.

hoping isnt enough. We have to hold him accountable for the shitty choices that he is making.
This would be one of the many.

anything to tell obama its not ok to ignore the american peoples civil liberties.
this whole gay straight thing is the new black and white (in regards to the civil rights movement) as a black american I would expect him to respect civil leberties more than this display of ignorance.

Let's be clear, while the President did not support same-sex marriage he did support the repeal of DOMA. It was a promise clearly present on his campaign website, and then Whitehouse.gov. It is no longer there. He deserted the people who gave him his power.

Before running for President, he supported same-sex marriage. Most people of either major party who run for president are crooks.

Obama is not in favor of Gay Marriage, he said that in an interview. He is for Civil Unions.

Seperate but equal is inherently unequal.
Supreme court made a ruling about this a long time ago. Back when they seperated things for black and whites. Same thing different names. Instead of black and white its gay and straight, instead of white facilities and black facilities its marriage and civil unions.
the fact that he doesnt support equal marriage but is in favor of civil unions should speak volumes about the web of lies he has set up.
He isnt about change, he just needed a hip catch phrase for his election.

Where I come from, we'd call that "using a euphemism". A civil union is when Sally and Billy get married before a Justice of the Peace. That is a civil union. Obama is for gay marriage, and you know it. Apparently, Obama feels that if he uses the term "gay marriage" he might lose support, among his nominal Christian supporters.....

And now, a word from "the loyal opposition." Obama has all but elevated LGBTs to sainthood. So I was quite amazed to read this. DOMA seems to be diametrically opposed to Obama's agenda, and for him to defend it seems to be a "slap in the face", sure. But he probably figures his adherents are so fiercely loyal, that soon it will be "forgive and forget". He will always have the gay vote, just as he will always have the Black vote. So, gays will continue to support him despite this.

"Obama has all but elevated LGBTs to sainthood." You have some proof to back up such a silly claim?

Of course he did. President Obama never said he supported gay marriage. I really don't understand why this is a shock to anyone.

Very upsetting. I live in Massachusetts and am very thankful to be able to marry, but I am still outraged by my peers' lack of rights across the country. We've gotten very far from where we started but still have many miles to go.

Suddenly Canada is so much more attractive.
I'm getting tired of this. I know there's lots of issues right now, but I voted for Obama because he promised me the same rights, benefits, and responsibilities as heterosexual unions. And we all know that separate but equal is not equal. So what's that leave? Marriage for everyone or civil unions for everyone. I will not tolerate second-class status.
I want my relationship with my partner to be protected. We've been together for 3 years in 3 days and we can't get even get a domestic partnership because we haven't had a joint bank account for a year. But my sister can marry the boy she met two weeks ago.
