The Kominas, a punk band out of Boston, are part of a burgeoning Taqwacore scene that many South Asian youth are turning to as a release from a conservative culture.

    • I was joking, I like these guys, thank you for mentioning Afro punk though, I think its a great comparison. After that documentary though I havent heard much about that scene. Has it died out? Unfortunately I expect the same thing to happen to Taqwacore.

    • ouch otis. what's up with that comment???

as an old school, back in the day punk / anti racist skinhead who has listend to more punk than i care to remember, i think taqua-core is the most exciting thing to happen to contemporary punk, regardless if it sounds pop to some folks.

both on the surface and roots level taqua-core is a reminder that punk is not owned or grounded in white / western culture. the current thriving afro-punk scene is just one good example of how a dying punk culture has been revived by the grassroots.

also... keep in mind that this video only shows some of their songs.

if you check out their entire lp you'll hear their politics and humor intertwine, for a sound reminiscent of the reagan youth.
