Christian conservatives oppose hate-crimes protection for gays and lesbians

Image...
Conservative Christian leaders are opposing a bill that would provide federal hate-crimes protection for the gay and lesbian community. The hate crimes legislation would provide special funding to state and local law enforcement to investigate and prosecute hate crimes, and expand protection for the first time to gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transsexuals and the mentally and physically disabled.

The Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act, named for a gay man killed for his sexual orientation in Wyoming, would allow the Justice Department to assist in the prosecution of hate crimes committed against minorities that result in death or serious injury.

Christian conservatives have raised fears that pastors would be prosecuted for inciting hate crimes if they preach against homosexuality, despite assurances that the law only targets physical violence. To stop the legislation, a few Christian leaders have suggested repealing all hate-crimes law, which would undo historic protections for race and even religion. Many Christian conservatives claim hate-crimes laws are unconstitutional.

Is the Mathew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act necessary? Are laws against hate-crimes constitutional?

Hate groups or hate-crimes will be stopped, they imtimidate us, they would not listen to reason(well most of them won't), and now they attempt to seize whatever they dispise by their religious rules...Hate can never solve anything...We shall defend the rights of others, because they deserve equality, no group should be hated just because their god told them so.....

I defend(By how you say? Well, actions speak louder than words) the rights of others, and question discrimination and stereotypes....Hate...

Well, you see, they(Many hate groups) have gotten away with deceiving tricks in the past, that pretty much made the present even more infested with hate, such as religious fights(for example), because of religious fights, people have to make war, because people have to make war over religion(the typical "My God opposes that rule, and if he opposes that rule, we must defend it") Man was not made to go into war, simple equation:

Labeling + Hate + Stereotypes = Hate Groups

    Resolution:

If we all set aside our differences, and find a cmmon things we all share, then just maybe, the fighting will slightly(or entirely stop)....

of course they oppose it because they are all latent , self loathing homos . legislation of this kind would force some of them to ask "why is it that i'm such a f-ng weirdo when it comes to homo-ality ? why am i so obsessed with hating on homos ? " at least that's what i think might occur .

If people committed hate crimes against christians , it would be a different story . Remember ancient ROME anyone ?

They're opposed to this because what they preach could be misinterpreted as hate speech/inciting hate crimes. Nobody thinks "Hm, now that you mention it, since what I preach could be misheard as such, maybe there's SOMETHING WRONG WITH WHAT I'M PREACHING?!"

Pishhhhaw. What am I saying? Logic? in my religion?

So does this mean we are going to more agressively prosecute people who kill minorities than people who kill just regular straight white guys? Does this mean that killing a straight white guy will carry a lessor sentence than killing a minority of some type or another? If so, I'm against it. A crime is a crime, hate is in the eye of the beholder.

American Christians are idiots. Stop listening to them.

Christians are protected by the same hate crimes legislation that would protect us.

While hate crimes laws are symbolically important, I am far more eager to see ENDA, DADT, and DOMA dealt with.

Not all Christians oppose hate crime laws. Keep in mind that seventy percent of Americans are Christian.

I really dont understand their mentality, they claim to be all about jesus and peace.

But then they turn around stab jesus and his "sacred" teachings in the back, and support the senseless violence against anyone who thinks differently than they do.

    WTF!!!?

Would jesus get off his high horse and come slap some sense into his idiot followers.

It's so easy to stray from original intent. 2000 years after Jesus supposedly lived, and his followers are endorsing hate crimes against fellow humans. "Judge not lest thee be judged". "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." The problem is that these people are so deluded, they truly think they are without sin, and therefore justified in their attack against others. But even then, their logic is twisted, because Jesus was supposedly the only man without sin, and he PREVENTED attacks on the "unholy". Simple-minded, self-righteous, homophobic hypocrites. Go find a vanity mirror and tell yourself how glorious you are, and leave everybody else alone.

    This may not be real.

It is apparently a blog entry not a news article. There are no references that are checkable and no instances directly cited.

This type of bs legislation SHOULD be opposed by everyone. There are already laws and penalties addressing crimes of violence. To make a group special because of lifestyle is absurd. What happened to the 14th Amendment (one that should be repealed but we still have it) and the equal protection clause??? What happened to common sense?? This is tantamount to criminalizing thought.

The liberal mindset and their "victimhood" without which the libs could not exist, defies understanding and logic. There seems to be nothing in our lives that they do not want the government involved in. Truly it is a mental disorder.

HOLY CRAP PEOPLE!!! Nowhere in this link does it say that the law will be changed to create harsher sentences for hate-criminals and nowhere does it state that thoughts will be on trial. It is however offering special funding for the investigation and prosecution of hate-crime cases. Stick to the facts before you fly off the handle.

What's wrong with the laws that are on the books already for crimes?

If you read the actual bill (HR 1913 or SB 909) there are very disturbing things in it. "Perceived race?" What, people don't know what race they are now? "Perceived gender" What, people can't figure out if they are a boy or girl?

The sale of the bill is dependent on the media painting it as Christians against the rights of gays, etc., (again) - and that's not the issue.

Why do these groups need a special set of laws? (when there are already laws written for ALL) and what exactly is going to constitute "hate"? Why do these groups get special funding for defense and where crimes are committed against them?

It's a liberal deal once again. A bad deal. A crime is a crime and there are laws against them.

Most are seeing this as a back door approach to religious censorship. You watch. Let's close down the christian conservative churches because everyone in them are haters.

"gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transsexuals and the mentally and physically disabled."

How did the mentally and physically disabled get involved in this?

Providing a little financial support to a victim of a hate-crime is hardly the equivalent of religious censorship.

In my opinion (not a part of the proposed bill), a preacher can preach all he wants about the "sinful" act of homosexuality, but if he is directing and inciting hatred at homosexuals as people or especially at individuals, he should be held accountable for incitement.
