As the landslide victory of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Iran's disputed election provoked unrest, French President Nicolas Sarkozy denounces the result of Friday's vote as a "fraud."

"The extent of the fraud is proportional to the violent reaction," Sarkozy said Tuesday. "It is a tragedy, but it is not negative to have a real-opinion movement that tries to break its chains."

"If Ahmadinejad has really made progress since the last election and if he really represents two thirds of the electorate... why has this violence erupted?" asked the French leader.

The remarks come as Iran has decried what it calls interference in its internal affairs by certain countries. On Tuesday, Iran's Foreign Ministry summoned a group of European envoys to Tehran over their countries' "malicious stance" toward Tehran.

    • The old saying is " if it ain't broke don't fix it" seems to me that the Iranian public is doing just fine without us...the last time we ran our mouths about Iranian internal affairs was when we tried to prop up the Shaw...as I recall that blew up in our faces and I'm glad that at least our president has learned from that disaster just as most of the right wing reactionaries have not.

      Obama and Brown have calculated the cost of speaking out at this time, and have determined that it would be counterproductive to the Iranian people if they were to appear as meddling outsiders from the west.

      slar i have to disagree, the new generation is hungry for change and the Iranian gov would have to drive out the whole next generation of educated middle class to sustain their current hold.

      they either change like the CCP did or they die out as the new guard comes in. regardless, the new generation will be MUCH less trusting of gov than the previous one and in a couple decades that will have a serious affect on the region.
